VINTAGE BOOKS & VINYL RECORDS

SHARE SALE TABLES

SEPTEMBER 9 - 19

A first time combination old records and vintage books sale, all at reasonable prices, will be held by the Friends of the Library Bookstore September 9 through the 19th on the main floor of the library, 1110  Oxley Street.

The vinyl and 78 rpm records will include a great variety of former popular artists from Bing Crosby at the height of his career to Bette Midler and Elvis Presley. Orchestral selections range from albums of 50 original performances by the legendary Glenn Miller to slip-cover albums in the Time-Life series "Great Men of Music". The latter includes such artists as BelaBartok and Richard Strauss with brief biographies featured.

Over 300 fiction and non-fiction vintage books in the sale were culled from their "possible silent auction" candidates by the bookstore's silent auction coordinators Elizabeth Krauss and Cathy Pierson.  Included are many off-beat subjects and titles such as Dream City, Pictures of the Columbia Expo, 1890; short stories of L.A. author and sculptor John Edgar Berry (and related Tagore material) 50s and 60s; Josephus: History of the Jews (1900 edition); Mosses From the Old Manse, Hawthorne, Riverside Press edition; Kon Tiki, Heyerdahl (1950 edition), and four volumes from the 60s of Screen World.

SILENT AUCTION:
Mouth watering items

Four of the ten items included in the current Friends of the Library Bookstore's Silent Auction climaxing August 30 are likely to make some collectors-and possibly dealers-mouths water. Books may be viewed in the glass-topped display case to the right as you enter the library, 1100 Oxley Street.
Of note is item No.7, a first edition, first printing of Herman Wouk's
"The Caine Mutiny" (Double Day, N.Y. 1951). It's relatively rare to find a first edition, first printing with a dust jacket in as good condition as this one. Wouk's great naval adventure won the Pulitzer prize and was later made into the iconic film starring Humphrey Bogart.
A monograph on artist Millard Sheets, whose sculptures are featured at the South Pasadena Public Library including the restoration of a bas relief "The Children's Hour" recently hung on the front wall of  the library, is included among articles in item No.2. This is number 146 of a limited edition of 1,000 copies and was published in 1935 when Sheets was 28 years old.
Two Oz books, No.9 and 10, also make this a special silent auction.  No.9 is "Patchwork Girl of Oz" Reilly & Lee, Chicago, 1913 (#7 of canon). No dust jacket. Apparently never had color plates or color illustrations. Munchkin travels through Oz to save uncle.
No.10. is "Glinda of Oz", Reilly & Lee, Chicago, 1920 (#14 of canon). No dust jacket. Ten color plates. Not in great condition. The last of the Baum-Oz books, published posthumously (Baum died in 1919). Both books have paste-on colorful covers and were probably printed in the late 20's.
Other items included in the auction are No.1, two cookbooks:
"Burnt Toast" Women's Auxiliary California Babies & Children s Hospital, Los Angeles, 1942 and "The Settlement Cookbook" compiled by Mrs. Simon Kander, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1944.
No.3. Three copies of Argo Magazine, Frank Munsey Co., N.Y. 30's and 40's.
No.4. "A Sentimental Journey", Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) Henry Altemus, Philadelphia, 1899.
No.5.  "Nine Chains to the Moon", R.Buckminster Fuller, Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1936
No.6.  "The Bounty Trilogy", Charles Nordhoff, James Norman Hall; Little, Brown & Co., Boston, 1946, Wyeth edition.
No.8. "A Treatise on the Principles and Practice of Medicine", Austin Flint, Henry C. Lea, Philadelphia, 1881, 5th edition.

Poster Windfall !

One of several vintage travel posters donated to the Friends recently sold for a whopping $4500, a $3000 profit for the Friends. Years ago the posters were removed from library walls and placed in storage. After discussion and appraisal (thank you Patrick Ela) and discussion the Friends placed them with Jim Lapidus at the International Poster Gallery in Boston. The sale of the Penang Poster was a wonderful surprise. Bookstore chair, Dorothy Cohen, who originally thought to sell the posters at a community wide fundraising auction was thrilled, "that's more than I thought we'd get for all of them".

Needless to say, the Friends welcome the windfall and will put the profit to good use for the Library.

New Bookstore Crew

Chinese Language Book Donations

The Friends Bookstore is making an effort to expand its offerings of Chinese language and other Asian language books in recognition that Chinese-Americans reportedly now total 25% of South Pasadena's population.
Assisting with this endeavor is a new crew of three volunteers, Alice Hwang, Peter Leung and Shareen Lo, who are sorting Asian language donations and deciding which should be priced and sold in the bookstore and which should be sold on the main floor 50 shelves.  It is preferred that donations be left at the reference desk and not brought upstairs.

POPULAR MUSIC CD COLLECTION IS AVAILABLE

AT THE LIBRARY

The South Pasadena Public Library features a music CD collection that is not to be missed.  Music CDs are available in a variety of genres including blues, classical, jazz, rock, pop, country, opera, folk, holiday, world, and soundtracks.  Music CDs can be checked out free of charge for three weeks at a time.  People can find classic artists like the Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis and Michael Jackson as well as more contemporary CDs by Justin Timberlake, Florence + the Machine, Norah Jones, Coldplay, and Beck.  Library patrons often comment on the collection's variety and the eclectic, obscure titles in the Rock category.  Children's music CDs are also available free of charge for three weeks.

A central part of the Library's collection is the Austin A. Ichinose Memorial Music Collection.  Austin was a library employee and music lover who died in 2011.  He built his personal eclectic music collection that he readily shared with others, so the Library staff and Austin's family honor his memory with this special collection.  It continues to grow and features some of Austin's favorite artists like Nick Cave, Brian Eno, and the Flaming Lips.  The Ichinose family continues to support this music collection so that new music titles can be added on an ongoing basis.

CHECK OUT THIS YEAR'S OSCAR AWARD WINNING MOVIES

FROM THE LIBRARY

The South Pasadena Public Library carries a wide selection of DVDs for checkout including this year's Oscar Award winning movies like 12 Years A Slave, Dallas Buyer's Club, Blue Jasmine, Gravity and Frozen.  The DVD collection includes both non-fiction and feature film selections that can be checked out free of charge for three weeks at a time.  People can browse the always-changing new DVD area as well as shelves of movies covering everything from ballroom dancing, travel destinations, operas and documentaries.  The feature film collection spans foreign films, classic musical productions and current films, fresh from movie theaters.  The Library also carries some popular TV series like Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones.  There are also children's DVDs available in both fiction and instructional subjects.

In 2012, LA Weekly recognized the South Pasadena Public Library as the "Best Public Library to Spoil You Rotten," citing the movie collection and in particular, the Criterion Collection. The Library checked out DVDs over 77,000 times last year.

LA Premiere of "The Byrd Who Flew Alone"

Gene Clark Music Biopic  -  Sept. 18

A free public screening of "The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark," will be presented in the Library Community Room on Thursday, September 18. It will be the Los Angeles premiere for the much-praised 2013 documentary about the life and work of the immensely talented singer and songwriter of The Byrds. Their first single "Mr. Tambourine Man" soared to Number 1 on the charts in 1965 when Beatlemania was at its peak. The Byrds' distinctive blending of folk and rock was a strong American response to the British Invasion, and they became one of the era's most iconic bands.

The film's Producer and Co-Director Paul Kendall will be on hand from England to introduce this compelling biopic. He began this ambitious project because he felt that Clark has never been given the credit he deserves as a musical trailblazer. Read more...

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a half hour live set of Gene Clark songs performed by Carla Olson and David Plenn.
