Holiday Sale Preview Night
November 22, 6-7:30 P.M.
|
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY MEMBERS GET FIRST CHOICE OF HOLIDAY BOOKS
Preview Night for Friends' members of the annual holiday sale of gift-quality books in the Community Room is Friday, November 22, 6-7:30 p.m. And, for the first time, the sale will be open to the public there in the room the next day and on Sunday. Books will be moved to the library's main floor on Monday, Nov. 25.
The advantage to the public of retaining the books in the Community Room for two additional days is that all the books may be viewed at the same time. Previously, because of library main floor space limitations, all the books could not be displayed at one time and were fed out gradually as they sold.
For non-members in the community, memberships will be offered at the door on Preview Night. The evening will feature free gift wrapping of books purchased there and refreshments of white wine, cheese and crackers and grapes.

Author Night: Nikki Giovanni - November 5th, 7 P.M.
|
The poetry of Nikki Giovanni has spurred movements and inspired songs, turned hearts and informed generations. She's been hailed as a healer and a national treasure. But if her reputation is writ large upon the national stage, her heart resides in the everyday where family and lovers gather, friends commune, and those no longer with us are remembered. Her latest book Chasing Utopia affirms once again why Nikki Giovanni is as relevant as ever.
Those who make a purchase of at least $1 in the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library Bookstore after Monday, October 28 at 11:00 am will be eligible to receive 1 or 2 free tickets to the Nikki Giovanni Author Night. The Friends Bookstore is located upstairs in the South Pasadena Public Library. The Bookstore's phone number is 626 441-5294.
Tickets will also be available beginning the release day for the book, October 29, 2013 in Pasadena at Vroman's main store, their Will Call department, and at Vroman's Hastings Ranch location. Two tickets will be given by Vroman's with the purchase of a copy of Chasing Utopia; pre-orders are welcome. For answers to any questions about the Vroman's tickets, please call (626) 449-5320.

Children's Services: Fall Programming
|
The South Pasadena Public Library congratulates the 2,650 children and teens who participated in the Summer Reading Program. In just seven weeks, they read over 19,500 hours. The Library also thanks the many generous community sponsors for their support of books and reading.
The Library has a variety of free children's programs planned for the fall, including
storytimes, Barks and Books, In 'N Out Burger's Cover-to-Cover Reading Program, and a Journalism series for tweens.
From September 17th to November 8th, a variety of storytimes
will be offered. Library staff will share stories, fingerplays, crafts, and music with children at Family Storytimes for all ages on Tuesdays from 7:15 p.m. - 7:45 p.m., Preschool Storytimes for 3 to 5 year-olds on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and Toddler Storytimes for 1 to 2 year-olds on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. and for 2 to 3 year-olds on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. - 11:20 a.m.
Barks and Books sessions will be held on the 1st Mondays of the month on October 7th, November 4th, and December 2nd from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Children's Room. Children, ages 5 - 10, are invited to visit the Library to read animal-related short stories of their choice to Katie, the companion dog from the Pasadena Humane Society Companion Animal Program. This makes reading fun and it builds confidence in reading aloud. Also, the selected books will help children realize that animals experience a range of emotions and have basic needs too. In turn, Barks and Books encourages them to treat all animals with respect and kindness. Register online at http://southpasadena.evanced.info/signup/eventcalendar.aspx.
For children ages 4 - 12 years old, the In-N-Out Burger Cover to Cover Reading Program will be provided from October 5th to November 16th. Participants who read 5 books or have 5 books read to them, can visit the Children's Room at the South Pasadena Public Library for their achievement award certificate. Sign-ups begin October 5th.
The critical skills of observing, evaluating, and communicating what is going on in the world will be emphasized in this fall's journalism program for tweens, sponsored by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library. Professionals from the fields of print and broadcast journalism will mentor students, ages 10-15, during the four-week program, which begins Friday, Oct. 11th, at 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the SPPL Community Room. Topics include; reporting; broadcast journalism; high school journalism and why journalism is important in today's world. Speakers include longtime LA broadcast journalist Rosalie Fox and nationally recognized investigative journalist Justin Pritchard of the Associated Press.
Students may register online.
