Meet John Josse, a new friend of SEAWA:

I am semi - retired and have been an Albertan for 15 years, having moved from Ontario with its many lakes and woods. I have grown to love the prairies and its river valleys, and am amazed how the rivers, changing seasons and spring runoff nourishes  the beauty found in and around our valleys and coulies; prime example being the South Saskatchewan River basin.
It is precious and we have to raise our voices to protect and enhance our watershed heritage. SEAWA Forever!
Good news on Earth Day!

A new report highlights growing biodiversity awareness worldwide.

The 2013 Biodiversity Barometer report launched by the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) shows that 75% of consumers surveyed worldwide are aware of biodiversity, while 48% can give a correct definition of the term biodiversity.

Young people tend to have the highest awareness of biodiversity (80%), as well as more affluent and well-educated people.

What we're reading this month:
For thirty years, American Rivers has produced the America's Most Endangered Rivers report to highlighted urgent threats to rivers. Through the report, they sound the alarm on hundreds of rivers, to save them from threats like pollution and new dams.  Read the 2013 list of "America's Most Endangered Rivers" here...

An interesting article from Scientific American about the economics of water, including the statement, "Both water quantity and quality could be traded as goods."  Read the article here.

50 Ways to Help the Planet!

"Going green" doesn't have to be a daunting task that means sweeping life changes. Simple things can make a difference. The contents of this list might not be new, but they're worth repeating! (Sometimes it takes a few reminders.)
STOP! Let us help you plan your life!

On June 8, SEAWA will be co-hosting Alberta's first Prairie Appreciation Festival with the Nature Conservancy, the Prairie Conservation Forum, and others. The day-long event will feature nature walks, games, interpretive displays and food! Stay tuned for more details.

SEAWA will be holding their annual river canoe trip on the weekend of July 12-14. Start polishing your paddles!

SEAWA has chosen Kin Coulee Park for our annual Shoreline Clean-up. Join us on Sunday, Sept 22. We'll need help if we want to beat the amount of trash we cleaned up last year at River Valley Park in Redcliff!

... and don't forget to look for SEAWA at local events throughout the summer. We'll be at Spectrum, Canada Day celebrations at Kin Coulee, and at the Stampede. We're always happy to answer questions, and listen to your concerns, about local land and water issues!
