Meet Mike Scarth, a very good friend of SEAWA:

Born and raised in Edmonton, I currently live in Calgary, but plan on moving overseas (Vietnam and Thailand) with my wife Helen in the next year or so.  My passion around all things to do with water began by spending half my youth under it - involved in competitive swimming from the age of six, I was fortunate to represent Canada at the 1975 Pan Am Games, 1976 Olympics, and 1978 Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

Through my work with several organizations, including SEAWA, I've been working to make access to water and environmental data and information easier and more transparent.  The growing adoption of the internet and new smart mobile devices provides a number of new innovative opportunities to connect data with decision makers, engage youth and improve environmental awareness and outcomes across the watershed.

I'm proud of my relationship with SEAWA, and its collaborative approach towards engaging its members and reaching out to the community.

Salmon are beginning to swim up the Elwha River for the first time in more than a century. But University of Washington marine geologists are watching what's beginning to flow downstream -- sediments from the largest dam-removal project ever undertaken. Read more here...

"The way water is managed in the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) will become even more important in the face of changing weather patterns and climate." Read more about this initiative here.

Alberta Wetland Policy

Alberta is (still) reviewing how it manages wetlands and is (still) in the process of drafting a new provincial wetland policy. While we wait (patiently), read more about the interim policy here.

As the world population increases, and industry continues to expand, Earth's freshwater reserves are being stretched dangerously thin. See the disparity in water consumption between wealthy and undeveloped nations here.
