See the Africa and Asia Programs of the RSF
The Myrtle Beach Safari is home to the Rare Species Fund where tourism dollars help support grass-roots international wildlife conservation efforts. RSF staff participate hands on in the field helping to ensure the survival of some of the world's most endangered species. By putting essential money and equipment directly into the hands of people implementing the programs, RSF ensures the greatest value for every dollar spent. To date, the Rare Species Fund has provided more than $1 million to conservation efforts worldwide. Your support through TIGERS Preservation Stations, TIGERS Preserve, Myrtle Beach Safari and the Rare Species Fund has helped to make this happen!
Thailand
Fishing cats are found throughout tropical Asia and India. Conversion of natural habitats into palm oil plantations and other industrial use has driven the cats to seek food in populated areas. The only available food they find is in farms and fisheries. Locals retaliate by hunting, snaring, and poisoning the fishing cats, whose population has shrunk to dangerously low levels. The RSF contributes to the conservation of fishing cats through the Fishing Cat Research and Conservation Project, which conducts basic surveys, organizes conservation research initiatives, and spearheads on-site programs geared towards restoring natural habitats, educating local populations, and promoting conservation efforts to local businesses.

Kenya
The International Elephant Foundation supports wild elephant conservation and education, both in managed facilities and in the wild. One example of the many projects supported with funding from the RSF is in Burkina-Faso and West Africa, where the human population will triple by 2050. IEF's philosophy is simple: people protect what they appreciate and we appreciate what we know intimately. More than 80% of the children who took part in the IEF educational program had never seen an elephant before. Now hundreds along with their families are involved in long-term elephant conservation. Such efforts connect local populations to their African wildlife heritage and a rapport with nature that had all but faded into history. Zimbabwe
The Rare Species Fund has delivered GPS and photographic equipment to help support the work of the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit in the Upper Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe. The RSF also pays the monthly salary of a VFAPU Ranger which is responsible for removing snares from the park and apprehending poachers. Since its inception, the VFAPU has removed in excess of 10,000 snares and have rescued countless animals from an agonizing death. By working with and employing members of the local community, the VFAPU is helping to instill a local value for wildlife beyond the bush meat trade.
Borneo
Founded by Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas in 1986, Orangutan Foundation International operates Camp Leakey, an orangutan research area within Tanjung Puting National Park, and the Orangutan Care Center, home to 330 displaced orangutans. By protecting orangutans, these organizations simultaneously protect the habitats of many other endangered species. The RSF is supporting many OFI programs including forestry restoration, protection of virgin rain forests, and have directly participated in the re-introduction and release of ex-captive sun bears and orangutans.
South Africa
At the turn of the 20th century, an estimated 100,000 cheetahs lived throughout Africa and in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Today there are just 7,500 cheetahs left and South Africa is home to fewer than 1,000 of these majestic cats. RSF provides funding for the work of Cheetah Outreach, an education and community-based program created to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and to campaign for its survival. Launched in January 1997 by founder Annie Beckhelling with just one hectare of land and two cheetahs, Cheetah Outreach has grown to be one of the most respected cheetah preservation agencies in the world.
Find out more about the many international projects being helped by your participation in the Myrtle Beach Safari by visiting the Rare Species Fund website.
