Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit Receives Digital SLR Camera, GPS, and Cell Phones

The mission of the Rare Species Fund is to provide critical funding to international wildlife conservation programs and assist them in the daily operations of their efforts. This mission was carried out again recently when Robert Johnson met with Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit's founder, Charles Brightman. Watch this video for an incredible aerial view of Victoria Falls as you learn about the increasingly important on-the-ground patrols throughout Zambezi National Park.

The Rare Species Fund donated GPS and photographic equipment to VFAPU which will aid in the logging of locations as well as taking a visual record of any poaching incidents. More recently, cell phones were donated to Charles and his team to be used during counter-poaching activities. Long term, this data can help to identify patterns which VFAPU can then respond to on the ground in the Zambezi National Park, outside of Victoria Falls.

The Rare Species Fund also pays for the monthly salary of a VFAPU ranger. These rangers patrol the Zambezi National Park looking for animal and human movement as well as  locating and removing snares. These dedicated VFAPU rangers have removed over 21,000 snares and the teams have rescued countless animals. VFAPU also spends long hours on education projects to show the Victoria Falls communities the true value of the wildlife resources that surround the town.

The Seven Natural Wonders of the World

The Victoria Falls are one of the seven natural wonders of the world and have been designated a World Heritage Site, under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. The Falls are surrounded by the 5,780 acre Victoria Falls National Park and the 141,000 acre Zambezi National Park, bordering the southern bank of the river. These state-protected areas are home to a varied flora and fauna, which, in recent years unfortunately have been subject to increased human-wildlife conflict pressure.

Charles Brightman, a local safari operator and conservationist, together with the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, established the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit in January 1999, in an effort to fight the alarming levels of destruction that were taking place. Since this time, VFAPU has worked in close cooperation with the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, to achieve many successes.

Having started off with three scouts initially, the unit has grown in strength and now has twelve full-time scouts actively patrolling an area of approximately fifty square kilometers surrounding Victoria Falls. The VFAPU patrols operate seven days a week, day and/or night, on an endeavour to combat poaching in all its various forms. All patrol operations are in accordance with the Senior Warden of the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Zambezi Camp. VFAPU personnel comprise of ex-commercial security guards and ex-game scouts from Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

The Rare Species Fund would like to thank Charles and his team for their continued efforts to retain the beautifully unique ecosystem of the Zambezi River including Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Learn more about anti-poaching and conservation efforts for chimpanzees, lynx, elephants, tigers, ligers, orangutans, gibbons, apes and more through the Rare Species Fund. To see these amazing species up close and personal, visit www.myrtlebeachsafari.com/signup to get started on your own interactive tour!
