You Won't Believe These Animal Friendships

The true stories shown here offer insight into the amazing lives lead by our animal ambassadors. In the wild, animals spend most of their time looking for their next meal, protecting themselves from danger and ultimately battling to survive. With their dietary, veterinary and safety requirements met, many animals at the Myrtle Beach Safari transcend the bounds of conventional friendship and explore new abilities that wouldn't be possible if they were focused solely on survival. The happy and stable environment these animals inhabit enrich not only their lives, but these amazing encounters between two very
different species inspire all of us to reevaluate what we can do to make the world a better place!

You have probably heard of the famous animal friendship of Suryia and Roscoe, orangutan and hound dog. We are positive you have never heard of GEORGIA and SPARTACUS!

Not all friendships come in the cute and fuzzy variety. In the middle of the Myrtle Beach Safari is a large pond and waterfall that acts as home to countless fish, frogs, turtles, green herons and even a couple alligators. One of the all
igators in residence is named George. As George grew we eventually realized that "he" was a "she" and George was renamed Georgia. As is the case with most reptiles, both the turtles and the gators spend a large amount of time basking in the sun, heating up their cold blooded bodies.

It is not uncommon to see both species hanging out in the same vicinity, following the sun around the shoreline, soaking up the rays. What was unusual, however, was seeing a turtle riding on the back of an alligator like a reptilian tug boat. Upon closer observation, it became clear that the same turtle was not only regularly using Georgia as a mode of transportation, he was following her around the pond to lay next to her, which Georgia seemed quite content with. Because of his brave actions, we have named this intrepid turtle "Spartacus".

You have probably heard of the famous animal friendship of Bubbles and Bella, African elephant and black lab retriever. We are positive you have never heard of HANTU and PONCHO!

Hantu the white German shepherd grew up as a puppy at the Myrtle Beach Safari. Over the years, she has spent time with many other species, some big, some small, sometimes even playing surrogate mother to some of the local wildlife.

During mid-summer, one of the safari staff found an opossum that had been hit by a car. Although the mother had perished, there was still a chance to rescue the baby. Under veterinary supervision, the 'possum, nicknamed "Poncho", was eating well and starting to thrive. The major thing missing in his life, however, was a mother figure. 'Possums spend much of their time riding on their mother's back. This constant contact with another living being provides the baby 'possum with a stro
ng sense of nurture and safety. Poncho found this necessary connection in Hantu the white German shepherd. Poncho eventually grew into a large handsome 'possum, well as handsome as an opossum can be, and he and Hantu have spent many an hour wandering the forests together surrounding the Myrtle Beach Safari. Even to this day, seldom is there an afternoon that Hantu doesn't go for a walk through the woods with her very favorite marsupial by her side....well, on her back!

You have only a few opportunities left in our 2015 season to bring your family together to learn about these friendships and our many pioneering conservation efforts.
