February 11
Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
Holy Mary, in the cold and gray of winter, you brought the warmth, light and beauty of your presence to St. Bernadette in Lourdes.
In the often obscure depths of our lives, in the depth of the world where evil is so powerful, bring hope and return our confidence! Amen.

Welcome 2013!
Greetings!
My hope is that this electronic newsletter finds you in good spirits and ready to embrace the holy season of Lent. Thank you for all you do for teens and young adults! You help to advocate and provide pathways for this generation to participate and engage their faith in so many ways. Thank you too for all of your prayers, emails and words of encouragement on the recent passing of my dad. He is now at peace and has been embraced by our Lord. My family continues to pray for him.

Certainly, this is an exciting time in our diocese as we prepare to welcome Bishop Dennis Sullivan as our new shepherd, the eighth Bishop of Camden. It is exciting to work with our new Bishop, and I know that he will be eager to meet you and the youth and young adults of our diocese. I am also extremely grateful to Bishop Joseph Galante for his faithful service and care for the young church. We have seen youth and young adult ministries continue to be a pastoral priority in our diocese and within parish communities.
I would like to highlight two opportunities for you and your ministries this Lent. In celebration of the YEAR OF FAITH, we are hosting a Diocesan Youth Congress on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at St. Simon Stock Parish in Berlin. Our theme is Faith Alive and the keynote speaker is Mr. Ansel Augustine from New Orleans. Ansel is a dynamic speaker and is sure to help animate the day and gathering. I hope to see you and at least two participants from your parish or school community.
The other opportunity is a workshop entitled Retreats for Teens. This is being hosted on Saturday, February 23, from 10 A.M. - 3 P.M. at the Stockton College Catholic Campus Ministry Center in Pomona, NJ. This day will be one of prayer, learning and practical ideas that can be used to help your retreat ministry with the young church.
Please know that you are the purpose of my work! I am here to support your successful ministry! How can I help you? Please call, message or even contact me on Facebook. Please know that I am grateful for you and your faithful service with the young church!
Peace and all good, Greg Coogan

| Workshop: Retreats with Teens |
WHAT IS A RETREAT?A retreat offers young people the opportunity to reflect on how God has been working in their lives, on their relationship with Christ, and to begin to explore their own call to discipleship which they received at Baptism. Retreats, especially those that include peer ministry, are perhaps one of our Church's most effective methods of evangelization and catechesis. WHO CAN DO RETREAT MINISTRY? Any faith-filled disciple with the proper training can be involved in retreat ministry! Effective retreat ministers are those who are actively living their faith and are willing to share that faith journey with others. If you are a responsible, honest, mature leader, Retreat Ministry Training will help you develop the skills you need to be a retreat minister. WHEN: Saturday, February 23, 2013, from 10 A.M. - 3 P.M. WHERE: Stockton College Campus Ministry Center at 235 South Pomona Road, Pomona, NJ 08240 COST: Registration is only $15 per person which includes all program materials and lunch. Scholarships are available if requested by contacting Greg Coogan at gregory.coogan@camdendiocese.org |

Ash Wednesday
Connection
|
Ash Wednesday will be here before you know it. Mass and the distribution of ashes makes an impression on the young adult church. It was always an amazing day on a large secular college campus noticing the young adults who participated in services and who publicly marked themselves for faith. There's something about the richness of this day and Lent. Catholics get marked, get set, go! This day is an awesome day to connect or reconnect with the young adults. The young adult church needs to see our best efforts at doing so. Here are a few strategies:
- Distribute a one-page guide to current Lenten practices.
- Offer Lenten daily reflections that can be taken home, accessed online and
used for personal prayer. (See the side bar for further ideas.) - Take home information on "What is Lent?" - possibly a Catholic Update
- List or provide online resources including retreats, podcasting, and prayer
opportunities. (See the side bar for further ideas.) - Suggest applications for mobile devices that will aide spiritual practices. Loyola Press has a new one for 3 Minute Retreats. Click here for more information.
- Consider organizing a variety of service opportunities including evening and weekend times. Don't forget to allow time for reflection and socialization after the experience. Visit Romero Center Ministries for more info.
- Schedule and advertise a church building tour and be sure to include the different practices that your parish does during Lent (e.g. Removal of Holy Water from the fonts, cover statues)
