BIRDIES & BOOKS CHARITY GOLF EVENT

On Monday, September 8, 2014, golfers teed off for the 2014 Birdies & Books Charity Golf Classic at the legendary Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest.   It was an incredible day - the weather was beautiful, the food was delicious, the service was impeccable and the camaraderie was memorable.

But most impressive was the generosity of all our corporate sponsors and the 108 players from companies all over the Chicagoland area who came out to support the mission of Bernie's Book Bank.   They teed off to the sounds of traditional Scottish bagpipes.  Golfers enjoyed a lunch buffet, a beautiful afternoon of golf and the chance at adding their names to the coveted Birdies & Books trophy.

We raised enough money to collect, process and distribute 210,000 quality books, which supplies 35,000 more at-risk Chicagoland children with 6 quality books.

We thank everyone who helped make this event so successful - our fabulous chairs, Barrett Davie and Jamie Wildman, the impressive staff of the Onwentsia Club, our dedicated volunteers and our generous sponsors:
Congratulations to our Championship Team:
Duncan Bourne, Tim Flannery, Elliot Farkas and Bernie Floriani, Jr.!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

We want to give a shout-out to Jack Skinner of Lake Forest! Jack loves to volunteer and brings his enthusiasm to Bernie's Book Bank's Processing Center on a regular basis.

Jack, 17, first learned of Bernie's Book Bank through friends who had had lots of fun volunteering themselves. In addition to volunteering with Bernie's Book Bank, Jack is part of a volunteer group at Lake Forest High School called "Men's Club" and sometimes volunteers with CROYA (Committee Representing Our Young Adults). When he's not giving his time, Jack is hanging with friends or is on the gridiron playing football and running track for Lake Forest High School.

Jack says the environment at Bernie's Book Bank is what sets it apart. "I don't think any other organization has the type of fun and friendly environment that Bernie's Book Bank has. Everyone here is very kind and welcoming to all of the volunteers."

Jack, whose favorite children's book author is Dr. Seuss, encourages anyone to start their own book drive through Bernie's Book Bank. "Do it. Book drives are an amazing way to help the less fortunate. You can do it through your school, your church or even on your own."

Interested in volunteering like Jack? Click here for our weekly drop-in hours. For those interested in starting their own book drive, email our Book Collections Manager, Dawn, at [email protected].

A MESSAGE FROM BRIAN

Dear Fellow Berniacs,

As you can see, Bernie's Book Bank continues to be a busy place and an organization that prides itself on offering many diverse & meaningful ways to get involved and support our mission.

Our mission is to provide 12 quality Books for a Better Life every year to EVERY at-risk Chicagoland child from birth thru 6th grade.

We are well on our way.  This year alone, we will collect, process & distribute more than 1.3 MILLION quality children's books!

However, we need YOU to complete our mission.

I challenge you today to ask yourself, "What's next for me and Bernie's Book Bank, what else can I do"?

Here's a few ideas:

  • Collect books; set a goal and have us help you reach it.
  • Spread the word about Bernie's Book Bank and our events; forward this newsletter to your friends; like us on Facebook and SHARE our story and progress.
  • Volunteer your time at the Processing Center; bring in your book club, co-workers, church or synagogue group or just come on your own, you WILL make friends here.
  • Invest in Bernie's Book Bank; make a donation or do some grassroots fundraising for Bernie's Book Bank (lemonade stand, bowl-a-thon, bake sale, etc.)
  • Attend an event-join us on Oct. 15th for the Book Lovers' Lunch Chicago.  Go to  for more details.
  • Come in for a tour of our facility and learn more about what we are planning for in the future!

Contact me directly with any questions at [email protected]

Thank you for all you do and thank you in advance for asking yourself, "What's next"?
