SUMMER OF SERVICE CAMP

Bernie's Book Bank loves summer camps! We recently joined forces with Vernon Hills Park District and their Summer of Service Camp!

"S.O.S." Camp spent time volunteering in our processing center and are running their very own book drive.  They have set a goal to collect 10,000 books! The campers are working hard to spread the word about their goal and efforts to fellow campers and the community.

Bernie's Book Bank Founder and Executive Director Brian Floriani said, "We are over the moon to be partnering with the Vernon Hills Park District for the Summer of Service Camp.  We commend Recreation Superviser Marty Walsh, his staff and the S.O.S. attendees for focusing this summer camp on helping others - what incredible role models for all of us!"  Bernie's Book Bank Staff members visited their camp to have a pep rally & brainstorming session.

Book Collections Manager Dawn Watrous speaks to campers with Intern Elizabeth Blasko
They are filming a video and will be in the Vernon Hills Fourth of July Day Parade to publicize their book drive! Bernie's Book Bank is supplying collections bins and marketing materials, and the S.O.S campers are designing their own flyers and posters. Help support these young philanthropists by spreading the word and donating your outgrown children's books.

Donated books can be dropped of at Vernon Hills Park District facilities from July 7th thru July 21st.

PRINTER'S ROW LIT FEST RECAP
by Eric Decker, Marketing Intern
Bernie's Book Bank staff and volunteers had a blast hanging out at the Chicago Tribune Printer's Row Lit Fest! I volunteered at our table for four hours on the second day of Lit Fest, and it was great sharing our mission - and our bright green, glow-in-the-dark pencils - with so many fest-goers.  150,000 people attended the festival!

When people would wander to our table, many would take a look at our logo, then look up and ask me, "What's a book bank?" I was able to chat with parents, their children, teachers, librarians and many other book lovers.

By the end of my shift, I felt more a part of the mission of Bernie's Book Bank. It is one thing to have the mission we have, but to tell others about it and see the interest and excitement of others wanting to not just get involved, but make our mission a reality, was truly heartwarming.

Thanks to everyone who helped make our first trip to Printer's Row Lit Fest a big success!

MORE SUMMER FUN

Bernie's Book Bank will be at the GLENVIEW SUMMER FESTIVAL

this Saturday, June 26th from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.   Volunteers will

be standing by to answer any questions and to share the mission of Bernie's Book Bank with festival attendees!  So stop by and pick up your Bernie's Book Bank GLOW-IN-THE-DARK pencil!

We'll also be at the WILMETTE SUMMERFEST on Saturday, July 12th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  We are looking for volunteers to help.  If you are interested in helping out for just a few hours, send Nancy an email at [email protected].  This is a great volunteer opportunity for families to share outdoors and partake in the festival activities - including food, music, shopping and children's activities.

We want to send a special shout-out to MORNING GLORY FLOWER SHOP, with locations in Glenview & Wilmette for sponsoring our attendance at both of these festivals.  Not only are they a great BOOK DROP NETWORK PARTNER, where you can conveniently drop your books for donation, but they also donate 5% of your purchase directly to Bernie's Book Bank!  Click here to visit their website.
  Thanks, Morning Glory!
A Message from Brian
"Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me ... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be."

Happy Summer!
