MEDICARE: The word itself is enough to make people's eyes glaze over and grown men head for the hills mumbling "let the wife figure it out, just sign me up".
Now that we have finished with the Affordable Care Act and the Medicare Part D annual enrollment, I can once again focus on people who are turning 65 or coming off of group insurance who have worked past their 65th birthday.
Here are a couple of things that you should know as you careen towards that magic number of 65 or full retirement, whichever comes first.
1) Go to SSA.GOV and sign up for Medicare. It is easy quick and straightforward. Part A has a zero cost if you have worked 40 quarters during your working carreer, and part B will cost you 104.90 per month (possibly more if your earnings are higher). Social Security handles the Medicare sign up's, as they deduct your premiums directly from your Social Security benefits. If you are already on Social Security then you will be enrolled automatically.
2) Choose a Medicare Supplement Plan and a Medicare Part D prescription Plan (that's where we can help you).
3) Get an age into Medicare physical. You have 6 months after you turn 65 or age in. (sorry you have to see a doctor).
4) Familarize yourself with your immunization and other preventative care benefits. They are there for your use so use these benefits.
5) Call us with any questions. We have been handling Medicare for over 10 years. If we have not heard the question then we will know where to go to get you the answer.
I will not go into all the options that you have for supplemental and part D in this article because it is specific to each person, but call us and make an appointment and we will work together to get your Medicare benefits figured out.
You have worked all your life for these benefits. Let us help you know what they are and how to use them to the fullest!
