Castell Insurance   ~   May  2013  Newsletter

The month of May begins an exciting time in our town.  Come and celebrate the Irrigation Festival Parade with us.  We will be providing bleachers and a BBQ for our clients and their families.
Bleachers will be open around 11am or bring your own chair.
The grills will be fired up by 11:45am just in time for the Parade's big kick off at noon.  We hope that you can make it and have some fun in the sun with us!

We will be accepting donations of peanut butter for the Sequim Food Bank.  The price of peanuts has risen so high that they are running low in supplies of this Food Bank staple.  This is one of the largest expenses the Food Bank has.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Julie Speelman to our team.  Julie will help with administration and marketing.  You will have an opportunity to meet her at our BBQ, so please stop by and say hi.

Phil
As a financial planner I do not advocate trying to time the market as far as jumping in and out trying to catch the swings that occur with some frequency.  Studies have shown that the buy and hold approach of a position have generally proved to provide a better return over time.  The stock market continues to trade at or very close to all time high's and the news from corporate earnings seem to justify the current momentum.  The following article outlines a few more of my thoughts and comments on the current situation.

Long Term Care

I first started offering Long Term Care insurance to my clients well over 20 years ago and believe it or not I still have a number of those clients as policyholders. About a dozen years ago I did a study and found out that my clients had received well over $1 million in paid claims.  I am sure that figure is now in excess of $2 million. Many people may never need to use their LTC policies, but they still benefited from the tremendous peace of mind knowing that if the worst thing that happened they would have some coverage.  For those that collected, what a benefit it provided at that taxing and stressful time. While LTC insurance is not right for everyone most people should at least review their options before they make that decision

Shred Event 2013

We were thrilled that our second Shred Event was a big hit.  Thanks to Christy, our fearless counter, we know that we had 237 drops and shredded an impressive 5 tons of documents securely.  We gratefully had additional help this year - Christy's son Jesse and James' school day pals from Seattle - Nick and Ian. Sadly our group photo was overexposed as you can see above - but still worth posting.  After all the work was done - we all enjoyed pizza and beer at the Islander Pizza & Pasta Shack which is within walking distance for some tired and thirsty workers.  Big thanks to Scott from Lemay Mobile Shredding who worked right along side Team Castell.

Staff Lunch

We work hard and therefore we play hard!  Closing the office for one lunch period each month, we venture out to a local restaurant to stop and smell the roses or rather the delicious food!  April's choice was Jose's Famous Salsa Taqueria on Washington St. in Sequim.  They have an extensive salsa bar which is well worth a sample.  If you look closely at this group photo you can see Phil taking the picture!

Referral Drawing

This months Referral Drawing boasts a $50 gift certificate to Imagine Gifts and Boutique. The lucky winner will be just in time to look for a lovely Mother's Day present in the shop which is just down the road from our office.

How much does
"IT" cost?
How will I pay for "IT"?  What will "IT " cover?
What if I do not buy "IT"?
What is "IT"
Well since you are reading an article from Castell Insurance I think we can assume "IT" is health insurance, since the biggest story about health insurance, is Obamacare, we can assume Obamacare is "IT".   So let's look at "IT" and answer what we know.

1)  How much does it cost?
Well the truth is we still do not have that information, but we do know that it is not going to be less expensive.
NO this legislation is not going to decrease the cost of healthcare;
it was designed to cover people who could not afford or did not have health insurance coverage.
All kinds of numbers have been thrown around as to how much it is going to go up, but since I cannot stomach fear mongering, I will just tell you to expect increases.

2)
How will I pay for it?
Why, you just write a check for it...But seriously premiums are based on your income.
If you are under 400% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) then you will receive tax credits to purchase the insurance.
FPL for a family of 4 is $94,200.00

3)  What will it cove
r?
Again, this is based on the level of coverage that you purchase, which will be likely based upon what you can afford.
There will be 4 metallic levels Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. We will get more in depth on coverage next month.

4)
What will happen if I do not buy the insurance?
There will be penalties.
The IRS has been tasked with being the watch dog and applying penalties, BUT they have also been told not to be aggressive about collecting the penalties. The biggest stick they have is to withhold tax refunds. It is a very complicated system on who will get the penalty and who will not.  There are many reasons a person would not get a penalty.  They include income, being Native Americans, religion, and the list goes on.  Income based exclusions can be figured out using the link here to a calculator from the Kaiser Family Healthcare Trust.

Home & Auto

There's a new trend

in auto insurance that has people calling their own privacy into question.  To most of us, myself included, our privacy matters a lot.

I bet I have your attention now!  Several companies are beginning to introduce a tracking device that is installed in your own vehicle to monitor your driving behaviors.  The company can monitor several things about your driving habits like the time of day you drive, how many miles you drive, how hard you brake or quickly you accelerate.  It doesn't seem fair that they can monitor you without your consent right?

Well the good news is that they can't.  They can however offer you a tradeoff for this driving data.  Many companies out there today are offering you the opportunity to enroll in these monitoring programs in exchange for lower rates or accident forgiveness.  Some companies are discounting your premiums up to 30% in exchange for this data while others will simply forgive your next speeding ticket or accident.

Check out this article below from

The Economist for an interesting read on how this is already taking place in Europe.

In addition we currently offer two auto insurance carriers that offer this form of program.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this topic I'd love to discuss!
