As a person who has made a living advising clients for over 25 years I would like to think that I am experienced and knowledgeable. However, sometimes I just have to sit back and scratch my head in amazement at the gyrations of the financial markets. My guiding principal in working with client's nest eggs and retirement accounts is safety and preservation, tempered with a splash of growth. I will pose you a couple of questions and I would love to hear your answers. If you were to sit down and think about the world today with the situation in Europe as well as the budget and deficit here in the US, where do you think the stock market will be in 2 ~ 3 years? a) Right about where it is now? b) 20% higher than now? c) 20% lower than now? Without a single exception, folks I have spoken with think the market will be the same or lower. The stock markets are very near all-time highs and have continued to rise even as the US has faced both a fiscal cliff and sequestration in the past 90 days. If your investments are in risk products like stocks and bonds, I think now is an excellent time to review your portfolio as well as your risk tolerance. My next question is even easier for most folks to answer. Would you lose sleep if your investment lost 20% of it's value? We do not know when the stock market will have a correction, only that it will. Is your asset allocation appropriate for your situation? Most people are complacent with their investments and remain fully invested when at times a more prudent approach should be considered. These are just a few thoughts I would like to leave you with. If you would like to sit down and have a chat about your specific situation I would love to visit with you.
