Castell Insurance   ~   March  2013  Newsletter

With the month of March we welcome the hopeful arrival of spring. In the Northern Hemisphere animals end hibernation, plants come to life and we are on the look out for the first Robin.  The Author Emily Dickinson calls the month of March, "the month of expectation," which is so true. "March winds and April showers, bring forth May flowers!" Blooming daffodils put us in mind to seek out those seeds and begin thinking about planting a garden.

Talking of the end of hibernation  we sure noticed many more people enjoying an evening stroll at the First Friday Art Walk last week.

As a person who has made a living advising clients for over 25 years I would like to think that I am experienced and knowledgeable.

However, sometimes I just have to sit back and scratch my head in amazement at the gyrations of the financial markets.

My guiding principal in working with client's nest eggs and retirement accounts is safety and preservation, tempered with a splash of growth.

I will pose you a couple of questions and I would love to hear your answers.

If you were to sit down and think about the world today with the situation in Europe as well as the budget and deficit here in the US, where do you think the stock market will be in 2 ~ 3 years?

a)    Right about where it is now?

b)    20% higher than now?

c)    20% lower than now?

Without a single exception, folks I have spoken with think the market will be the same or lower.

The stock markets are very near all-time highs and have continued to rise even as the US has faced both a fiscal cliff and sequestration in the past 90 days.

If your investments are in risk products like stocks and bonds, I think now is an excellent time to review your portfolio as well as your risk tolerance.

My next question is even easier for most folks to answer.

Would you lose sleep if your investment lost 20% of it's value?

We do not know when the stock market will have a correction, only that it will.  Is your asset allocation appropriate for your situation?

Most people are complacent with their investments and remain fully invested when at times a more prudent approach should be considered.

These are just a few thoughts I would like to leave you with.

If you would like to sit down and have a chat about your specific situation I would

love to visit with you.

Newspaper Article
This months article from the Sequim Gazette was quite a departure from my normal style. Usually I try to be factual and informative but this month is totally different.

The column is far more opinionated than usual and more like an editorial. The subject matter is our government and the latest fiscal drama that is playing out in DC.

I would be interested to know if you prefer the feisty and opinionated Phil or the calm and balanced Phil, so please let me know.

This month I want to start talking about the upcoming Washington Health Insurance Exchange
Washington is one of only a few states that has chosen to implement and run our own health insurance exchange, as required by The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

What is the health insurance exchange?

It is an online tool that will show the user the qualified health insurance programs that are available in their zip-code for Major Medical Coverage.

Each qualified plan must belong to one of four "metallic tiers".

A metallic tier is defined according to the percentage of full actuarial value for plan benefits that are covered by the plan's premium (insurance-eze) (with the remaining percentage being the responsibility of the covered person):

  • Bronze: 60%
  • Silver: 70%
  • Gold: 80%
  • Platinum: 90%

The system will also access the IRS database to review your income and determine what level of premium support (subsidies) you are eligible for.

This information will then be applied at the time of purchase so you will know exactly what your monthly premium would be with and without the credits.

At least that is how they want it to work. This will be the tool used to evaluate and purchase your health care in the future.

Will it save you money? It will save you money if you receive premium support based on your income.

The income levels to receive some type of support or subsidy are quite generous, somewhere between 300% and 400% of the poverty level for a family of four.

If you make over that amount, you will likely pay more than what you are paying now.

Will it make it easier to buy and understand health insurance?

No, you will still need to understand the terms and conditions of the insurance programs, and even though the federal government has mandated "clear and simple language", insurance-eze is still hard to understand for most folks.

With this said we want to ensure that all of our clients that have Major Medical insurance through Castell Insurance, we will not abandon you. We will know how it works, and will work to prepare you for the new age with a program that fits your needs and budgets.

Home & Auto

When it comes to purchasing, Americans like to get the best value.

As a society we participate in loyalty programs, coupon clipping, price comparison magazines and still the good old fashioned art of bartering. No one likes to miss out on a deal. Nothing personifies this sense of thriftiness like the madness we see each year surrounding "Black Friday" and the midnight door buster sales.

Most of these ways of saving are hard to avoid. Television commercials, weekly coupons in the mail and of course window stickers help customers know where to get the best value.

When it comes to Insurance, many of these savings aren't so glaringly obvious. Discounts are abundant when it comes to Insurance but how do you know if you are receiving the discounts you deserve?

Examples of discounts you might be missing out on here in Sequim: low mileage, claim free, drivers training course, hybrid vehicle, newer home, no mortgage on home, multiple policy, good student driving, AARP or AAA membership discount, and many, many more.

Whether it's your homeowners or auto policy you owe it to yourself to ensure you're being rewarded in every possible way.

There's no need to wait until renewal to see if you would be better suited with another company. Contact us today for a free review of your policies.
