The Olympic Mountains and the blue waters are all on our door step reminding us of what a wonderful place we live. Our summer is just going to be a roller coaster ride of frequent weather changes and we are strapped in for the ride.  The weather forecast has had rumbling thunder and bold, brilliant lightening with plenty of PARTLY sunny, PARTLY cloudy or PARTLY windy!  The Lavender weekend is a great example of showing sunshine and the wet stuff!   Bring on a day of full sunshine please.

News You Can Use

Phil

I was actually surprised that the Supreme Court upheld as much of the Affordable Care Act that they did.  So now for all practical reasons, the fighting is over and it is time to do the heavy work and implement all the complex provisions.

I do not envy the employees of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner with the herculean task that they have in front of them.  I know 2014 still sounds like it is a long way away, but believe me it isn't.  You can read my expanded explanation of the Supreme Court decision in my monthly article in the Sequim Gazette.

Business News

Pension changes are coming for many.

Big business is trying hard to distance itself from its retiree's.

Over the past few years many companies that used to offer retirement health care plans are now choosing to offer their retiree's a cash allotment to purchase an individual plan of their choosing.

The same is now true with traditional old fashioned pension plans.

General Motors are  handing over $26,000,000,000 to Prudential Financial to purchase a group annuity for those folks who retired between 1997 and 2011. Count them zero's. That is $26 billion!  We get used to seeing the word billion but when you actually use the numbers it is quite staggering.

The retiree's will then have a conundrum on their hands. They will be offered either the safe secure guaranteed lifetime pension or the lump sum.

The pension does not adjust for inflation and could be eroded by future inflation. The lump sum gives them the ability to invest or spend the funds as they see fit. They could do better or worse and that is where it gets tricky.

It would be necessary to take into account expected life expectancy, health as well as investment options.

If you or anyone you know is in this situation,  it would be advisable to sit down with an experienced income planning advisor to try to assist in navigating this option.

Phil helps clients with similar situations on a daily basis and would be happy to review the numbers and options for you.

The Water Cooler

Good afternoon, time for a little Water Cooler break.  The boss has gone to check out the new grandchild.  Congrats to Phil and Sharon for becoming

grandparents.

Well, well, they did it.  As most of the nation watched, the Supreme Court upheld the

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).  Now we will see just how complex and expensive this can make our healthcare.  But that's all I am going to say about that, I subscribe to the opinion that change provides an opportunity if you look hard enough.  It is now the law of the land and I intend to be of service as opportunities present themselves

Speaking of opportunity, if you have the Lifewise Wise Essentials Rx plan, you have an opportunity.  Lifewise Health Plans of Washington is discontinuing the Wise Essentials Rx plan altogether.  This allows current members to change to other programs.  These changes can include altering your deductible either higher or lower on a guaranteed issue basis.  So if you are having some health issues and you want to lower your deductible, AND you are on the Lifewise Wise Essentials Rx plan, this is your opportunity.  However, a lower deductible will mean higher premiums.   It is important to consider all costs.

You also have an opportunity to enhance your drug coverage if appropriate.  Lifewise has a new plan that covers both generic as well as brand name prescriptions.  Obviously, this is at a higher premium.

These changes are again due to the PPACA.

This is the first of many changes to come. Regence Blue Shield has withdrawn from sale the popular HSA 50/50 plans. These have been the top sellers for price and coverage, because of the tax savings and low "out of pocket maximums." All of the insurance companies now have to begin to look at how they are going to interact with the consumer in the coming years.  We may see an increase in the number of companies that offer insurance in Washington; that would create opportunities. So keep that in mind as we watch this unfold.  Opportunities are there to be had.  Let's find them together.

Keep the ideas coming for future topics; I look forward to helping you with your health insurance needs.

Photo Opportunity

For those in the know, Phil has a "leg lamp" in his office which is from the movie, "A Christmas Story."   We could not miss a photo op with an anonymous new client who just so happened to be wearing the same fish net stockings that are on the  lamp.  She also has an amazing sense of humor which fits right in at our office!

Apologies for the delay of our monthly newsletter.  Phil and Sharon have made many trips to Seattle due to the arrival of their much anticipated first grandchild.  Grandson Quinn Lopez arrived June 28th and grandparents made a quick journey in the middle of the night to Swedish Hospital.  Daughter Cathy and her husband Carlos are enjoying the addition to their family.  You can see Quinn in the photo above.

Summer is always full of activities on the Peninsula so enjoy this time of year and we look forward to seeing you around town.
