NIH ISSUES ONLINE COURSE ON SCREENING YOUTH FOR ALCOHOL PROBLEMS
A new online training coursewill help healthcare professionals conduct fast, evidence-based alcohol screening and brief intervention with youth. NIAAA produced the course jointly with Medscape, a leading provider of online continuing medical education.
NIMH introduced a faster, more powerful search engine to connect its website visitors with vital mental health information. This improved search feature integrates NIMH RSS feeds with information from high profile social media platforms such as YouTube and Twitter and delivers nearly all results in less than 750 milliseconds.
This factsheet was written for foster parents to help them learn about LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) youth in the child welfare system, the unique risks they face, and the important role that foster parents can play in reducing those risks. The factsheet outlines specific actions that foster parents can take to create a welcoming home for all youth in their care and to promote youths' health and well-being in the community.
This National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering 60 Seconds of Science Video explains what is happening in the body when it undergoes an MRI. MRIs employ powerful magnets which produce a strong magnetic field that forces protons in the body to align with that field.

NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON MENTAL HEALTH UPDATES
PRESIDENT OBAMA'S EXECUTIVE ORDER LEADS TO NATIONAL RESEARCH ACTION PLAN
President Obama announced the National Research Action Plan (NRAP). NRAP is a coordinated effort by the Departments of Defense (DoD), Veterans Affairs (VA), Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education (ED) in response to last year's Executive Order that called for improved access to mental health services for Veterans, service members, and military families. NRAP provides a comprehensive approach to accelerating research on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as strategies for preventing suicide among Veterans and active duty personnel.

The ED and SAMHSA's National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) has launched its new website with a landing page dedicated to higher education concerns. Learn about research, field practice, and resources promoting safe, healthy, and learning-conducive environments within college and university settings.
RECOVERY MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2013
Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

Peer recovery support in behavioral health is a powerful and essential component of the recovery process. More recently, however, the recognition of the importance of peer support has led to more structured and intentional applications of this recovery support approach. This Recovery Month show will also address the use of peer support in recovery community centers and recovery living settings.

Using a public health approach, Project LAUNCH, a SAMHSA grant program, focuses on improving the systems that serve young children and addressing their physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and behavioral growth. This National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments webinar will focus on the five core service areas of Project Launch that address key prevention and health promotion strategies: developmental screenings and assessments in a range of child-serving settings; integration of behavioral health into primary care settings; mental health consultation in early care and education; enhanced home visiting through increased focus on social and emotional well-being; and family strengthening and parent skills training. The webinar will be offered twice.
