The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is pleased to inform you that the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released the results of the 2014 Organic survey.

2014 Organic Survey Data Released

At noon, today, the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the results of the 2014 Organic Survey.

The survey, part of the Census of Agriculture program, is an inventory of all known organic producers in the United States that are certified, exempt from certification (producers grossing less than $5,000 annually from organic sales), and those transitioning to organic production (producers who have adopted organic farming practices but are not yet eligible for certification).

Conducted by NASS, in conjunction with the Risk Management Agency (RMA), the 2014 Organic Survey provides valuable, detailed, objective information to help determine the scope and economic impact of organic production in the United States.

The survey gathered information about organic farming and ranching activities including:
  • Production of field crops, vegetables, fruits, tree nuts, berries, livestock, and poultry;
  • Production practices such as pest management, cover crops, crop rotation, rotational grazing, conservation tillage, water management, and buffer zones;
  • Production expenses;
  • Marketing practices, including wholesale, retail, and direct-to-consumer sales; and
  • Value-added production and processing.
For more information, NASS is providing results and publication materials online at www.agcensus.usda.gov/Publications/Organic_Survey/

In addition, the USDA Organic Working Group will host a 2014 Organic Survey results webinar on September 29, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eastern time. To access the webinar, go to www.readytalk.com and enter passcode 720 6000. For audio, dial 1-866-740-1260, passcode 720 6000.
