The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is pleased to share an instruction on the use of the word "organic" in brand or company names, and a reminder about the National Organic Seed Survey.

NOP Instruction:  Use of Brand or Company Names Containing the Word "Organic"

The National Organic Program is releasing an instruction on the use of brand or company names containing the word "organic." It clarifies the statutory and regulatory requirements regarding the use of brand or company names that contain the word "organic" or its variants on the labeling of agricultural products. The policy clarification is needed to provide fairness and equity in label use throughout the organic industry and to satisfy consumer expectations for organic products.

National Organic Seed Survey

The Organic Seed Alliance has launched its national organic seed survey.  The survey comes around every five years, and seeks to assess certified crop producers' attitudes and perceptions regarding organic seed, as well as understand current seed usage.

Certified organic crop producers, whether or not they currently use organic seeds, are encouraged to take a few minutes to complete the survey.  All responses are voluntary and confidential, and will be processed in aggregate; no data will be identified by individual or farm.

The data collected through this survey will be analyzed and compiled as part of the next State of Organic Seed report, which will be published in 2015.  This report captures successes, obstacles, opportunities and risks in organic seed systems, and will offer detailed recommendations for improving access to seed that is optimal for U.S. organic agriculture.

The deadline for completing the survey is October 3, 2014, and you may access the survey online.  If you have questions, please contact Jared Zystro at the Organic Seed Alliance.

The National Organic Seed Survey is conducted exclusively by the Organic Seed Alliance, a national non-profit organization that supports the growing organic seed movement.
