During the production of food ingredients, carriers, stabilizers, diluents, and other "ancillary" substances are frequently added. However, since they aren't stand-alone ingredients, they weren't previously reviewed by the NOSB.
Upon request from AMS, the NOSB is currently considering ways to incorporate these ancillary substances in their current substance review process.
To help guide this work, AMS asked the NOSB to do a trial review using microorganisms, an allowed non-organic ingredient known to have ancillary substances.
