AnnouncementJune 28, 2013
Greetings!

How much time do you spend complying with the documentation requirements in the USDA organic regulations?

Your feedback will help us better estimate how much time organic stakeholders spend on recordkeeping and related tasks.

We will also use your feedback to guide our efforts related to the Sound and Sensible Initiative.

What is the Sound and Sensible Initiative?

Public Comments: Documentation Burden

Every 3 years, the National Organic Program (NOP) must estimate the amount of time organic stakeholders spend developing and maintaining required documentation.

The NOP is requesting public comments to better estimate the time required to meet these requirements.

Examples of helpful feedback categories are provided below.

Organic Farmers + Processors

How long does it take you to:

  • Update your organic system plan each year?
  • Demonstrate your compliance with the pasture rule? (ruminant livestock producers only)
  • Demonstrate that an ingredient isn't commercially available in organic form? (processors only)

Organic Certifying Agents

How long does it take you to:

  • Review a farm or business' application for certification?
  • Prepare and submit your annual report to the NOP?

Organic Inspectors
