FLOATER CAKE ARTICLE

In this article I will show you how to make something called floater cake. Now a few of you may be familiar with this tried and tested bait from the 80's but a lot of the newer anglers will not even have heard of it.
So what is floater cake? Put simply it is a home made boilie mix that has had a few alterations in order to become an almost cake like floating bait. Now to make Floater cake you will need the following ingredients, in this example my 20ml Flavouring will be Bait-Tech's Sweet Coconut Liquid.
If you prefer you can use
Nutrabaits Coconut Elite which is more concentrated so I would recommend 3 to 5ml for this product.
150g Bread Flour
100g Cornmeal
100g Milk Powder
100g Wheat Flour
50g Coconut Flour
6 Large Eggs
20ml Flavouring
10ml Glycerine
2tsp Baking Powder
1tsp Brewers Yeast
1tsp Table Salt
1tsp Powdered Food Colouring (optional)
Now to make your floater cake. Firstly you need to place your Bread Flour, Corn Meal, Milk Powder, Wheat Flour, Coconut Flour, Baking Powder, Brewers Yeast and Table Salt into and air tight bag then seal it and give it a good shake to mix all the ingredients together. Once you have done this set it too one side.
Break the 6 eggs into a large mixing bowl and whisk them until the White and yolk are completely mixed with lots of bubbles. Stir in your Flavouring, Colouring (if your using any) and the Glycerine.
Now slowly add your dry ingredients a cupful at a time gently stirring it in until you have a mixture similar in texture to pancake mix, you may have base mix left over depending on the size of your eggs. Grease a square baking tray or cake tin with butter or cooking oil and pour the mixture in. Place the tin on the middle tray of a preheated oven at 150 degrees Celcius (gas mark 2) and cook for between 45 and 60 minutes.
Once you have a nice golden colour on the top of your floater cake, take it out of the oven and tip it onto a cooking rack, plate or other flat surface to allow it to cool.
Once your bait has cooled for about 30 minutes cut it into squares or whatever shape and size you want, when you cut it open you should find that you have something very similar to a nice moist sponge cake if it has all gone as planned although it will be firmer in texture than sponge cake. You can freeze this if you want to but I prefer to use it fresh.
If you would like to have a go using your own boilie base mix remember to use 6 eggs and 500g of your base mix then add flavouring, glycerine, brewers yeast, baking powder and salt as above.
As for hooking the bait you can either hair rig it by adding a small piece of plastic tubing onto your hair rig to prevent the bait being ripped off or as I prefer to do you can take a small piece and hook it through the outer crust as shown in the picture.
To show the effectiveness of floater cake I took this batch out on to my private club water where it has never been seen before and caught this fantastic 8lb 2oz Common Carp.
