Greetings Alumni and Friends!
Graduation is within sight and that means a new group of Alumni! We wish each of them the very best as they enter the workforce or transition to 4-year institutions.
As we wind things down this semester, we still have one fundraiser and that is our Drawdown for Men's and Women's Soccer, and Softball.  The event will be held on Friday, May 13th, at Brewskies in Hattiesburg. The original plan called for The Bottling Company, but renovations there, we have moved to Brewskies. We will get things kicked off at 6 pm. Tickets are $100 which admits two for dinner and drinks and gets one name into the drawing for $10,000. Lloyd Munn and his band will be performing for us that night. They did a great job at the Football Drawdown last year.
As you may have heard we unveiled the bronze bobcat a couple of weeks ago. It will be permanently placed in front of the C.L. Neil Student Center once the "plaza" project is completed. For now, you can see it, and perhaps have a photo op in the Tisdale Library lobby.
Our Softball and Baseball teams are still very much in the thick of things and are either in or will soon be in state tournament and postseason play.  If you have not been able to make it to any games, you still can catch some action at " The Bank".
Football has wrapped up spring training with 29 players working hard to earn their spot. The remainder of the group will be arriving in July and that will push our total number up over 60. Coach Buckley and his staff promise a new look for this fall.
On the academic side, we are rolling out half price tuition for the summer for the second year in a row. This is a great way to take some classes for a reduced cost. Be sure to sign up soon!

Until next time......Go Bobcats!!

Charlie Garretson
Vice President of Advancement
Director of Alumni and Foundation

Alumni Golf Tournament
The rain tried to jinx the Alumni Golf Tournament twice, but it went on without a hitch on April 12th. The Educational Furniture and Equipment Company team won the 17th annual Jones County Junior College Alumni Association Golf Tournament with a 53 at the Laurel Country Club. Pictured below, from left, are Ben Webb, Joey Landrum, J.T. Jernigan and Rahn Tew.  JCJC President Dr. Jesse Smith watches as golf pro, Rich Fulkerson putts.

JCJC Athletic Director Honored by FCA
Before the annual Fellowship of Christ golf tournament began, JCJC Athletic Director, Katie Herrington was surprised by an announcement from Jones County FCA Director, Justin Graves. The tournament will now be called the Katie Herrington
FCA Golf Tournament in honor of the JCJC athletic director, coach and athlete.
"The mission of FCA is to impact the world for Jesus Christ through athletics," Herrington said. "I am blessed that I can be a small part of the Jones County FCA ministry and to work with Justin Graves, many coaches and our FCA board to share God's love. I am humbled and honored about the naming of the tournament." To read more of Shawn Wansley's story, click on the link:

Deion Branch Inducted in MS MCJC Sports Hall of Fame
One of the most well-known football players in Mississippi junior college history was recently inducted into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame.
Deion Branch, who was an All-American wide receiver at Jones County Junior College and later a Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, represented JCJC at the Tenth annual induction banquet at the Muse Center on the Rankin County campus of Hinds Community College. Branch played in 1997-98 at JCJC and was an NJCAA All-American second-team wide receiver in 1998 when he played for head coach Parker Dykes.  To read the story by Shawn Wansley click on the link: Deion Branch Induction.
Bronze Bobcat
JCJC's VP of Advancement and the Alumni and Foundation Executive Director, Charlie Garretson teamed up with the Student Government Association to embark on a fundraising idea to create more school pride. A bronze bobcat was purchased with donations from alumni and student fundraising efforts.
This new bronze bobcat will be a permanent fixture in the Student Center Plaza in front of the cafeteria, after renovations over the summer.  It is currently housed in the library.
SGA sponsor, Sonya Dykes explained, "Having a Bobcat statue on campus will add to the tradition and pride that students have for JCJC.  It will be a focal point for pictures for students and alumni, and it will be a lasting landmark for the campus.

Graduation
JCJC Commencement exercises will be held
on Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m. for students whose last names end in "A" through "L."  An additional 1 p.m. ceremony will be for students whose last names end in "M" through "Z."
Our featured speaker will be JCJC history instructor, Wyatt Moulds.  He retired several years ago, however he continues to teach Western Civilization classes at JCJC.     He has embarked on a project that has found himself in the spotlight. Over the last several years, Moulds has been assisting with the historical research of a famous relative of his, Newt Knight.  The research has helped to create the feature-length film, "Free State of Jones," featuring Matthew McConaughey.  Moulds has been working with McConaughey and director, Gary Ross as the crew researched the Jasper/Jones County area for historical evidence, interviews and to get a sense of who this famous Civil War rebel was and how he is revered still today. The film is expected to be released nationwide, June 24, 2016.
Nurse Scholar
Mississippi Nurses Foundation Executive Director, Rosalyn Smith-Howard from the Mississippi Nurses Foundation recently presented the School of Nursing Leadership Scholarship to one of JCJC's nursing students.
Cristen Nash of Laurel said it was a very nice surprise to receive the $1,000 scholarship which she'll be able to use for tuition, books or bills. Nash was eligible for the scholarship based on her GPA of greater than 2.5, she is a full-time, undergraduate in her second year, she exhibits professional character, leadership, scholarship and service, is involved in her community, was a recipient of other awards and honors and she participates in School of Nursing activities.  Nash is expected to graduate in December of 2016.
Nurses Inducted
Jones County Junior College's Gammu Mu chapter of the Alpha Delta Nu Nurses Honor Society held its Spring 2016 induction ceremony with eight students being invited to be inducted into the society out of a graduating class of 47.
Requirements for inductees include an overall college GPA of 3.0, a B or better in all nursing courses which can be taken only once, and a demonstration of compassion and professionalism. The inductees worked as a group to complete a capstone project, and their chosen topic was recruiting. The eight recruited at Richton High School by talking to students about furthering their education, experiencing nursing and attending Jones.
