Greetings Alumni and Friends!
I hope that this newsletter finds all of you doing well and hopefully drying out from our recent rains. Wow, has it been a wet year so far.
So wet, in fact that we had to reschedule our golf tournament from April 1 to April 12; we are keeping our fingers crossed for that day!
We have had a busy spring semester so far, with plenty more to come. The same week as the golf tournament we are unveiling the bronze bobcat here on campus on Wednesday, April 13th at 12:30 in front of the C.L. Neil Student Center. We are planning a pep rally type of activity so come on out and join in the fun.
Softball and men's and women's soccer have a draw-down scheduled for Friday, May 13th, at The Bottling Company in downtown Hattiesburg. We will get things kicked off at
6 p.m. We will have live music, beverages, and food. Tickets are $100 and that gets two in the door with one entry into the draw-down for $10,000. Please contact the Foundation office or one of the soccer or softball coaches for tickets.
Our spring sports are doing well too! Come on out to campus and take in some baseball, softball, and or tennis when you can. You'll be glad you did!
Last but not least, football will soon kick off spring training. It won't be long til next season is here. Coach Buckley and his staff are sure to put the Bobcats back on the winning track.
Want to be more involved in Alumni and Foundation activities? Give us a call at 601-477-4145 to find out how you can help.

Until next time......Go Bobcats!!

Inaugural Legacy Tree-Dick Anderson
(Pictured above with the live oak tree and plaque dedicated to Dick Anderson are family members pictured left to right: Halli Stokes granddaughter of Dick Anderson, and her child McKenna Jane Smith; Lily Trest, granddaughter of Aline Anderson; Hope Perkins, granddaughter of Aline Anderson; Sharon Anderson Howard, daughter of Dick Anderson; Aline Anderson, wife of Dick Anderson; Grant Hedgepeth, son of Aline Anderson; Marlana Hedgepeth, daughter-in-law of Aline Anderson; Carla Bounds, daughter of Aline Anderson; Tony Bounds, son-in-law of Aline Anderson.)

A new tradition was birthed recently at JCJC through the Alumni and Foundation Office: Legacy Trees.  In March, we dedicated the first Legacy Tree in memory of Dick Anderson, a 1943 JCAHS and a 1956 JCJC graduate. He was also the 1993 Honor Alumnus.
The former Mayor of Ellisville for 14 years also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives for eight years. He contributed to the area in numerous ways and was honored nationally for his efforts.
The Anderson family gathered in front of Jones Hall by the mound to witness the unveiling of the plaque detailing his life of service in front of a live oak tree planted in his memory.  To read the story, click on the link: Dick Anderson's Legacy Tree

JCJC Bobcat Math League Recognized
JCJC's Bobcat Math League has once again been chosen as the recipient of the University/College Partnership Award at the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education Annual Governor's Awards. This is the second time the Math League has received this distinction, accepting it also in 2014.
For the last eight years, the  JCJC Math League has partnered with 21-23 area high schools to create a math league competition, patterned like an athletic league. In 2015, it impacted 360 students, involved 50 volunteers and received $36,000 in donations from private entities.
Partners for the 2015 Math League season include the college, 23 high schools, community liaison Chris Wilson, the Chisholm Foundation, Mississippi Power Company, Sandra Wright of Magnolia Real Estate, Howard Computers and Corner Market. This honor was given at the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education Annual Governor's Awards, held in Jackson March 15.
At the ceremony, MAPE awarded 22 school-community partnership programs that have produced outstanding results for students in grades K-12. These partnerships include schools working with school districts, institutions, organizations and businesses throughout the state. This is the second time the Math League has received this distinction, accepting it also in 2014.
"We were very excited to hear that the JCJC Bobcat Math League had received the MAPE's University Level Governor's Award for the second time," said Dr. Jessica Bunch, Bobcat Math League Commissioner. "MAPE has a 32-year history of supporting partnerships between schools and communities.  This organization works diligently to improve education and student success, as well as to improve economic development and quality of life. It is such an honor for the Math League to be recognized by this organization.

Natalie Beth Seales Tops in State
For the second time in two years, JCJC can boast it has the top student in the state. Sophomore English major, Natalie Beth Seales of Hattiesburg has been named a 2016 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar.  She received that distinction because she was the highest scoring student in Mississippi during the All-USA
Community College Academic Team competition.  She will be featured in a special edition of the USA TODAY newspaper on April 12, while she's in Chicago, Illinois for the official presentation.
Each New Century Scholar receives a $2,000 scholarship and certificate, and will be recognized in Chicago, Illinois at the American Association of Community Colleges' Convention later this month.
"Now I can go to Ole Miss!!!" exclaimed Seales when JCJC President, Dr. Jesse Smith told her the news. "There are so many opportunities now that I don't have as many financial roadblocks with these scholarships. I'm not closed off to any pathway, like law school has become more of a reality.  I feel so open to whatever happens now including entertaining offers from other schools to see what the best option is for me," said Seales.
Because her family moved a lot for jobs in the oil industry, Seales was home schooled. Her older brother's English tutor and a USM grad student at the time, Leah Holmes, is credited with helping Seales' love of the English language blossom. Seales said Holmes inspired her to never settle and always do her best.
Judges consider grades, leadership, activities and most importantly how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.
The All-USA Program is sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group and presented by USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
Kiana McFadden Silver Scholar Recipient
JCJC sophomore environmental law major, Kiana McFadden of Waynesboro is one of 50 students who was chosen as a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar recipient. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each Silver Scholar receives a $1,250 scholarship and a special medallion.
"It is astounding to me that I was one of the fifty selected and I feel very honored that the Coca-Cola organization has chosen me as one of the recipients for this award," said the physics and environmental law major. "More than 1,900 people submitted
an application and only fifty were selected as a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar."

 Remember When...

In 1980 when about 1,200 students from 29 area high schools participated in JCJC's first College Day as they visited campus and the "Free State of Jones" Jazz Band entertained at the event and toured the state?
