Hello! Alumni and Friends, |
It is with great sadness we share the news about the loss of one of our friends, former Foundation Board of Directors members and JCJC alumnus, Julius "Judy" W. King. We send our condolences to the King family.
The 93 year-old died Tuesday with family in Texas. He began his life on August 2, 1922 in Lockhart, MS. The family made their way to Jasper County where Judy grew up. He graduated from Heidelberg High School and then Jones in 1942, and continued his education at the University of Mississippi.
Desiring to serve his country, he graduated as an ensign from the U.S. Naval Midshipman's School at Notre Dame and served in WWII in the South Pacific. After the war he made his home in Laurel and eventually began a career in the oil industry and in real estate. Judy was a long time member of the Board of Directors of the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association.
His contributions to JCJC are numerous. He and his brother's family provided the seed money for the King Chemistry Center on campus. Mr. King served as chairman of the JCJC Foundation and was co-chairman of the Foundation's first major gifts campaign. He was 2001 Honor Alumnus with his best friend, the late V.A. Liberto. When his term on the JCJC Foundation board ended in 2012, after 21 years of service, King became the first JCJC Foundation Board Member Emeritus. He served as president of the Foundation Board from 1997 until 2003. He was a Life Member of the JCJC Alumni Association too.
The Kings are also credited with establishing and funding numerous scholarships: Mr. & Mrs. James E. King, Sr. Scholarship, the Marion Louise King Memorial Scholarship and he endowed the Sanderson Farms Scholarship Honoring Joe Frank Sanderson, Jr., for Mr. Sanderson's
commitment to philanthropic endeavors.
"I didn't get to work with Mr. King, but I know he had and will continue to have a tremendous legacy. The example of benevolence and passion that he set for JCJC and the work that he did should be an example for us all," said JCJC VP of Advancement and JCJC Foundation Executive Director, Charlie Garretson.
King was the catalyst for so many great scholarships and programs here at Jones. He will truly be missed by all.
He is survived by his two daughters, Mary and Kendall and their husbands and children. Click on the link for more information: Julius "Judy" King Obit
