Coach William Boone-JCJC Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees
The JCJC family is saddened to learn of the recent loss of our Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Coach William Boone, who passed away over the weekend.  He is survived by his wife Joyce and their two daughters, Sandra Kay Boone Alexandra and Kimberly Ann Boone Lozano. Both ladies are JCJC graduates.
 The Biloxi native coa
ched at Quitman High School, serving that community into his retirement.   Coach Boone has been a JCJC board member for more than 30 years and served as Vice Chairman since 2007. He was also a member of the JCJC Foundation Board of Directors for the past seven years.
He and his family established the Coach William C. Boone Scholarship Endowment a couple of years ago, through the JCJC Foundation Inc. for JCJC students. Despite not feeling well, he awarded the scholarship during the September Scholarship Day to personally meet scholarship recipient from Quitman,Tori Dew.
Most recently he reconnected with a childhood friend from the coast, Max Jordan who read about Boone in the JCJC Alumni Magazine.  He will be missed by all those who were touched by his many endeavors.
Ellisville HS Grad Still Performing
While renown comedian, Marty Allen's picture may be familiar to many of you, some of you may also remember his wife and Ellisville High School graduate, Karon Blackwell.

In 1959, Blackwell graduated from Ellisville high school when it was a part of Jones County Junior College, then enrolled in the University of Southern Mississippi.

Hattiesburg American reporter, Mary Lett-Mabins had the opportunity to catch up with Allen and Blakwell and share their story; including how they met in Ellisville.

HEADWAE
The annual HEADWAE, or Higher Education Day-Working for Academic Excellence program was established by a Mississippi Legislative Resolution to annually honor the academically talented students and faculty members of Mississippi's higher education institutions who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence. The Appreciation Day, hosted by the Legislature each February in Jackson, is the Legislature's way of saying "thank you" to these students and faculty for their commitment to the future of Mississippi.

JCJC's honorees are business faculty and division chair from Petal, Rick Bedwell and sophomore Jones student from Biloxi, Bridgette Wagner.

Bedwell's desire to change careers from automotive to accounting landed him in classes at JCJC in 1991. He joined the faculty in 1998 after garnering numerous educational honors, including PTK Regional Most Distinguished Student, PTK Gold Key Recipient, PTK President and being a JCJC Who's Who and Hall of Fame member. Over his 16-and-a-half years as a faculty member at Jones, his most recent accomplishment, getting both the academic and technical business division's Accreditation Council for Business Schools Programs renewed this year tops the list.

"To receive recognition for something I love and get to do every day is great!  However the greatest reward I get from teaching everyday is to hear and witness the success of my former students as they further their academic careers and enter the workforce," said Bedwell.

Wagner is a Tullos Scholar, PTK Academic Excellence Finalist and is a member of the State Championship Softball team, the Honor's Institute, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, JCJC Hall of Fame  and numerous community service projects.  The D'Iberville High School graduate is majoring in chemical engineering and aspires to return to the coast to work after getting her Bachelor's degree from MSU.

"I am happy to know that my teachers have recognized my hard work these past years to recommend me for these honors. I knew coming to Jones and juggling sports and school was not going to be easy no matter what career path I was taking. I am very thankful and honored to be the student representative for Jones. I feel privileged to know that I have been chosen by the Jones faculty to represent JCJC."

On Appreciation Day, the Honorees are invited to the State Capitol where they are welcomed by the Lieutenant Governor and recognized in each chamber of the Legislature. A luncheon follows wherein each student and faculty honoree is recognized by name in front of their guests, institution leaders, corporate sponsors, and legislators.

Clarke County Learning Center
Save the Date! Residents in the Clarke County area will soon have more education and workforce training options as the new JCJC-Clarke County Learning Center will be open by the end of the month.  A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is scheduled on February 26, at 10 a.m. to begin the process of moving in classroom equipment and to prepare to offer classes by this summer.

Black History Program
The annual Black History program will be held on Tuesday, February 10, at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
Keynote speaker, Dr. Dennis Kimbro is an internationally renowned speaker, a best-selling author of five books, a writing partner and master trainer for the prestigious Napoleon Hill Foundation, and he is on the faculty at Clark Atlanta University School of Business Administration. He is also a recipient of the Dale Carnegie Personal Achievement award.
He will be addressing the audience on the theme for this year's event: "The Value of Your Education."
JCJC Dean of Students, Dr. Samuel Jones invites the public and friends of the college to attend this event, which will also include discussions about leadership.
MACJC Legislative Luncheon

JC Voices students, Kylie Bohannon, Haylie Middleton and Chandler Brinson had the opportunity to get a picture with the Governor at the annual Legislative Luncheon, hosted by the MACJC.
Each community/junior college's faculty, students and administrators had the opportunity to meet with some of the state's highest officials thanking them for supporting the two-year college system. The informal luncheon was also a special opportunity for faculty and students to show off some of their culinary arts, hospitality and music programs.
Cheerleaders UCA Competition
Defying the odds with a bit of inspiration from their injured coach, the JCJC Cheerleader squad managed to place third in the nation at the UCA College Championship in Orlando, Florida on January 17. They were training for 1st place however Coach Kayla Hankins said the flu, injuries and her January 6th car accident may have taken a toll on the team.  Hankins broke her pelvis in a hit-and-run car accident outside of Hattiesburg, as she was headed to the basketball game at Jones.
The team placed third in the 2014 competition and fourth in 2013.  Hankins said she is proud of her squad for overcoming adversity and are champions in her eyes.  Shelton State Community College took first place for the eighth time, followed by Iowa Western Community College.
