Greetings Alumni and Friends!
We trust that each of you had a very Merry Christmas and a great start to 2015!

Speaking of 2015, I'll start with a bit of movie trivia. For those of you that are "Back to the Future" fans, 2015 was the year that Marty McFly traveled into the future and found everyone riding hover boards as opposed to skateboards. As far as I know, skateboards are still around, but who knows what the future holds!

All is quiet on campus as I write this update. Students are not due back for another week.

We will get things started for Alumni and Friends with our Bobcat Club Basketball tailgating on Tuesday, January 26th. We will hold that event in the Union in A.B. Howard gymnasium prior to our game with Hinds CC.

We are still finalizing plans for the golf tournament, which will be held on Friday, March 27th at the Laurel Country Club. More information will follow in the coming weeks on that event.

We will also be doing a baseball tailgating event but have yet to nail down a date for that event. We are looking at home games and of course, weather as that will be held outdoors at Community Bank Park.

As we transition into late winter and spring sports, let me take a moment to encourage each of you to come out and support our student athletes. Our coaches, staff, and student athletes do a great job in representing your alma matter.

As always, please encourage everyone that you know to join the Alumni Association and Bobcat Club!

  Until next time....Go Bobcats!

Charlie Garretson

Vice President of Advancement

Director of Alumni and Foundation

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments
Sixteen Jones County Junior College faculty and staff members were recently honored for their accomplishments in the workplace. The Appreciation Awards began in 2004 and focus on four individuals from three categories of employees: faculty, office staff and administrative support, and employees working in, maintenance, housekeeping, campus grounds and campus police. Each staff employee finalist was awarded a cash prize of $125 and the overall winner received $625. Faculty finalists each received a cash prize of $250 and the overall winner received $1,000.

The Faculty Recognition Program was designed and funded by the JCJC Foundation, Inc., and the college, with the luncheon sponsored by the JCJC Student Government Association, the college and the JCJC Foundation. Finalists are selected and interviewed by the Faculty and Staff Recognition Program Selection Committee. The finalists for the faculty awards were Dr. Ronnie Bishop-Social Sciences (above middle); Larry Looney, Industrial Services (middle right); Meri Ford Newell-Fine Arts (far right); Rhonda Robertson-Science (middle left) and Benji Sessums-Health and Human Services (far left) with Dr. Bishop winning overall.
The Office Staff and Administrative Support nominees included Tara Dupree (right) who has worked in Admissions for 13 years at the college. Kristen Register (middle) has served nine years in the Health Clinic and has been called out on several campus emergencies utilizing her paramedic skills. For 18 years, Daphne Yeager (not pictured) has worked in the President's and Business Offices and has proved to be a "vital" employee. The overall winner for the Office Staff and Administrative Support employees is Regina Poole Clark (left). She has worked in the Student Services and Academic Dean's Office's for 24 years.
In the maintenance, housekeeping, campus grounds and campus police departments, Gerald Griffin (above far right) was recognized for his three years working in transportation and grounds. Stella Chapman's (middle right) 24 years in housekeeping earned her a spot as a finalist. Jeffrey Morris (far left) was also commended for his 13 years in the transportation and grounds departments. The top award went to Ravel Anderson (middle left) who has worked in  housekeeping for five years.
The Leadership Award for Administrative Excellence was established two years ago to honor a mid-level administrator whose commitment to the profession has stood out amongst their peers. Campus Police Chief, Stan Livingston was chosen as the recipient of this honor for his four years as the police chief and for taking on the challenge of changing how the department operates. Livingston has basically implemented the same standards for JCJC as a city police department would enforce. Dr. Smith praised his efforts for transforming the department by going over and beyond to provide a convenient service for students. Livingston received a plaque and a cash award.
  English instructor, Dr. David Lowery
(left with Charlie Garretson) was honored with the Barbara and Gary Sauls Award for Excellence in Teaching Humanities. He received a $500 cash award in recognition of his abilities as a Humanities instructor who exemplifies intellectual integrity in the classroom, encourages independent analytical thinking skills, engenders a love for humanitarian pursuits and fosters a positive rapport with students. He was also recognized as the Faculty and Staff Associations' member of the Year.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The phrase 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

 Remember When...

in 1955 when there were two gymnasiums on campus?   The original gym was built in 1926 and

was sponsored by the senior class of that year.

The new Gymnasium-Assembly Building was completed in 1954.
