Greetings Alumni and Friends!
|
I hope that this update finds all of you well as we head into the holiday season.
We have been busy here in Alumni/Foundation as we wind down the semester. Our next big event is the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day on Friday, December 5th.
We have also made some changes to our Foundation website under the "Support Jones" tab. There are new ways to give to the Foundation with more to come.
Our men's and women's basketball teams are off to a good start. As of the writing of this update, both are undefeated and playing good ball.
As mentioned previously, we are beginning to work on and toward our Alumni Golf tournament this spring. We will be rolling out more information after the first of the year.
As always, if you are receiving this newsletter and need to update you alumni membership, please do so. Also, please pass along to anyone that you know attended Jones and NEEDS to join. We are recruiting all former Jones students.
Last but not least, all of us here in the Alumni & Foundation office wish each and every one of you and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Until next time, Go Bobcats!!
Charlie Garretson
Vice President of Advancement
Director of Alumni and Foundation

A Jingle Jazz Christmas
|
JC Voices and JC Jazz students are playing and singing for Christmas presents for the "Toys for Tots" program as they prepare for a "Jingle Jazz Christmas." Pictured left to right is: Shaquille Shelwood of Ellisville, Morgan Smith of Laurel, Sam Cruz of Pensacola, FL, Savannah Scafide of Long Beach, Harlan Mapp of Hattiesburg, Lauryn Easley of Laurel, Ashley Adams of Laurel, Steve Jones of Starkville and Caleb Guilbeau of Ellisville. The jazzy Christmas concert will be Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. in the
Bobby Shows Exhibit Hall in the Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center, located in the Howard Technology Park in Ellisville. There's one twist to this holiday gathering, the students and faculty in the JCJC Fine Arts Department request that you bring one new unwrapped toy for the "Toys for Tots" program as your admission to the concert. Toys, including sports equipment, board games and plush animals will be given to a child in our area this Christmas. In return for your donation, Jones music students will provide an evening of beautiful holiday favorites like, "O Holy Night," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and big band Christmas favorites performed by JC Jazz, under the direction of Jeff Brown. The audience will also be serenaded by the JCJC select vocal ensemble, JC Voices, under the direction of Dr. Susan Smith and accompanied by Dr. Victoria Johnson. JC Voices will sing several selections with JC Jazz, including "Gettin' in the Mood for Christmas," and the classic, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." The ensemble will also share popular tunes like the sentimental theme from A Charlie Brown Christmas, "Christmas Time is Here," as well as an arrangement of "The Man with the Bag and Santa Baby," along with several cherished sacred selections.

Art Show
|
Ceramics and art instructor, Melanie Eubanks and the Eula Bass Lewis Gallery manager, Amy Walters will have their artwork on display in JCJC's Eula Bass Lewis art gallery through December 10, 2014. The public is welcome to view the artwork on display at no charge.
Eubanks' pottery usually has a theme and is always practical or functional. Since her first discovery of playing in the red clay, forming animal sculptures at her grandparent's home in Mize, Eubanks' work has predominantly focused on ceramic creations. In this show, Eubanks shares her interest in the history of ceramics.
"I take a lot of inspiration from the ceramic work of the Minoan civilization that pre-dates the ancient Greeks. Part of my interest in their work is the way they decorate their volumetric forms," said Eubanks.
Her designs include painting inside the bowls and adding objects on the various pieces of clay art. Eubanks said she enjoys the simplicity and the connection to humanity's origins that creating with clay offers in this technological age.
"Making objects with clay seems like a contrast to the digital age in which we live. Like many people I know, I embrace this age of technology and all that it has to offer as it quickly and dramatically reshapes the way we live our lives. At the same time, I find a real connection to my humanness through making and using handmade objects," said Eubanks.
Her formal introduction to ceramics happened at the University of Southern Mississippi. She began teaching at JCJC in 1994 teaching ceramics, drawing and art history. She and her husband, who is also a ceramic artist, share a studio.
Walters' artwork focuses mostly on the vibrant use of colors in her paintings.
She uses thick layers of paint to give texture with figures, creating a scene or a story on the canvas.
"Viewers can use their own imagination to add to that story on the canvas which is fun! There are several musical themed paintings in this show because that has always been a favorite of mine, as well as the audience," said Walters.
The JCJC graduate studied art at the University of Mississippi with an emphasis on painting. For more information about the JCJC art show contact the gallery at 601-477-4148 or visit the gallery which is normally open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The gallery is closed for lunch daily from 11:30 until noon.
