Hello! Alumni and Friends,
It has been just a few weeks since I took the position of VP of Advancement and Director of the Foundation and Alumni Association. The staff here was already rolling down the track when I came on board, so I just jumped on the train.

This has been a very busy semester with all sorts of great activities thus far, and even more to come. The Hall of Fame event was a huge success with five great inductees and we have honored our first responders and those who serve our country in our armed services.

Our Alumni Association has reorganized and is moving forward. At our last meeting three new officers were elected and are ready to serve you as leaders. Harold Rowzee was elected President, Howard Patrick, Vice President, and Anita Crowder as Secretary/Treasurer.

We are working hard to grow your Alumni Association so that we can do even more for JCJC in years to come and we want as many people as possible to be a part of the action.

If you are not a member, please join, if you have friends or family that are not members, please direct them to our website and have them join or contact our office at 601-477-4145. Our staff can take it from there! The more you can do, the more we can do for others.

Also, you will want to make plans for Homecoming on October 17th and 18th. We will have a weekend full of activities as we cheer the Bobcats on to victory against Hinds.

In closing, I am proud to serve you as VP of Advancement and Director of YOUR Alumni Association and Foundation. My goal is to grow our association to be the absolute best that it can be and to raise awareness of JCJC while benefiting our students, faculty, staff, and friends. Please join me in this effort. Go Bobcats!!

Charlie Garretson

Vice President of Advancement

Director of Alumni and Foundation

Honor Alumni
Congratulations!!!  to three very special JCJC alumni who will be honored during Homecoming festivities.  On Friday, October 17, alumni and friends are invited to the Honor Alumni Dinner, at 6 p.m. at the Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center.  Call the Alumni Office for reservations.
Being honored are: JCJC 2000 forestry graduate from Taylorsville, Derrick Dease (top right), JCJC 1976 graduate, Robin Robinson (middle center) and 1961 JCJC graduate, Mildfred Valentine (bottom left) who was also the former concert choir director.
While at JCJC, Dease was selected to be one of five participants in an internship program at Colorado State University in 2001.  His research focused on the preservation of wildlife and vegetation habitats in South Mississippi using global information systems.  He accepted a CSU scholarship to finish his bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management in 2004.  He then enrolled at Yale University, on scholarship, and earned his Masters of Environmental Management.  He founded the Resources for an Inclusive Future for his Master's Project in 2007, as a method to get young students from rural and urban communities interested in the environment around them.  Dease partnered with Yale to sponsor the first RIF summer camp in Mississippi in conjunction with Mississippi State University, Alcorn State University, the Mississippi Forestry Commission and International Paper as co-sponsors.  At Jones he earned the A.T. Bassett Memorial Writing Scholarship and Business competition while a high school student.  He also worked in the Student Services Office his two years at Jones and was involved in the Forestry Club.
"Jones laid the foundation that my time at Colorado State, Yale, and my career with International Paper were built on.  It allowed me an opportunity to interact with faculty and administrative staff members that not only cared about my success at Jones, but also about me as an individual. I never felt like just a number on someone's enrollment sheet or just another student passing through campus.  Without at doubt, I know everyone at Jones wanted me to be successful then, and they continue to root for my success today."
Dease is currently an environmental engineer for International Paper's Georgetown Mill in South Carolina.  He has worked at other facilities in Vicksburg, Bastrop, Louisiana, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Alumni Accomplishment-Carson Atwood

The presentation, Atwood explained, "Covers 10 historical figures who have had a significant impact on the history of the world. It isn't a top-10 list but rather a list of people that you have some knowledge about but you might not understand their cultural significance."

The presentation and recognition of Atwood's honor from the Mississippi Arts Commission is free and open to the public.
Alumni Accomplishment-Dr. David Lowery
Congratulations!!!  to Dr. David Lowery on the publication of his new book. Available now in the JCJC Bookstore, Dr. David Lowery poses with his  newest accomplishment, resulting from a "challenge."
The 2012 Mississippi Humanities Council Teacher of the Year and JCJC English instructor, Dr. Lowery said his book began as a challenge with his wife.
"The writing of the book started over two years ago.  In late 2011, Jennifer and I decided that we would have a 'year of challenges' in 2012.  We wanted to do something each month that we considered a challenge--something we had never done before," explained Dr. Lowery.  His book, "Bounded in a Nutshell" is the result of his "artistic" challenge.
"I started writing poetry.  Since it was so different from the academic type of writing I had been doing, I decided to continue. When I had a significant number of poems, I decided to do something with this collection that I had been working on," said Dr. Lowery. His decision to pursue publishing the first collection of poetry has resulted in, "Bounded in a Nutshell."
The online description of the book enables readers to be, "able to see life in all of its varied eccentricities. From simple reflections of family life to vivid images of places that he has visited, Lowery is able to capture the importance and simplicity of day-to-day living in his poems. His keen eye makes note of the little things in life-effects that we most often ignore-and presents to the reader musings that help us see the importance of everything around us."
Readers might even catch a reference to his favorite author, Shakespeare!  Dr. Lowery's book can be found in the JCJC Bookstore, Xlibris.com, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.  A November 13, book signing from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. is being planned in the Laurel Library.
Dr. Lowery holds a doctorate degree in English education from Mississippi State University, both graduate and undergraduate degrees from The University of Southern Mississippi and his Associate's Degree from JCJC. Some of his previous articles have appeared in "The Reading Professor, Journal of Case Studies in Education" and "Mississippi Professional Educators Journal." In addition to teaching at Jones, Dr. Lowery has taught education courses as an adjunct professor at Mississippi State University and William Carey University. Dr. Lowery and his wife, Dr. Jennifer H. Lowery, have two sons, Noah and Owen.
Alumni Accomplishment-Anthony Maddox
Congratulations!!!  to Anthony Maddox a 1998 JCJC graduate and defensive lineman football coach at JCJC.  He had the opportunity to spend three-weeks interning with the Atlanta Falcons during their training camp in Flowery Branch, Georgia this summer.
"I got out there and it was just like coaching here at Jones. Of course, it's a bigger stage and a higher level, but we were doing the same things they do and they are talking about the same things in meetings that I do here with my players. Coach Bryan delivered his message the same way I deliver my message. It was a perfect opportunity for me to be in that position. He gave me a chance to get my feet wet at that level," said Maddox.

 Remember When...

in 1970 when several "little old ladies" in the downtown Ellisville area were renting out rooms

to JCJC male students?  "Mimi's Hall", located across from the Post Office gave thirty men over a period of four years a "home-away-from home".  Mimi's rules included, no girls and no shoes on the carpet.
