Carrie Hayes Valentine Memorial Scholarship
|
JCJC alumna and music major at JCJC from 1996-98, Carrie Hayes Valentine lost her battle with stomach cancer in September but her memory will live on through a music scholarship in her name. Friends and family are fundraising to endow the Carrie Hayes scholarship.
JCJC music and voice instructor Nikki Johnson was close friends with Carrie and said, "My first musical was, 'Little Shop of Horrors' and she was the gorgeous lead. She was perfect and breathtaking. The next year, I thought I had ARRIVED when she and I were double-cast as Irene Malloy in 'Hello, Dolly.' She's a rock-star. People all over the country adore her. Once you'd met her, you didn't forget her. I told her, being around her was like having been in the sunshine. I am not ashamed to call myself a fan!"
One of the musician's regular spots to play in her hometown of Prattville, Alabama sponsored a fundraiser in November to help endow the scholarship for a JCJC music student. Johnson believes that is the perfect way to honor her.
"Carrie was a bright and shining personality with a crystal clear, perfectly tuned voice. She never missed a note or a chance to encourage everyone she knew. Her passion for music and people will live on in the lives of the students that will be blessed by this scholarship fund."
