Honor Alumnus Donnie Scoggin
Congratulations!!!
to Donnie Scoggin, JCJC's 2013 Honor Alumnus.
For 17 seasons, football fans have seen Scoggin working diligently on the sidelines at Jones County Junior College games, lending his medical expertise when needed. The Ellisville native and South Jones High School graduate, first attended Jones from 1980-82. After going to the University of Southern Mississippi and also working for a few years, he returned to Jones in 1987 and earned his associate's degree in nursing in 1989. During this time he was quite active in the JCJC Student Nurse Organization and its many community service projects.   He then earned his bachelor's degree at USM and his master's degree from Mississippi University for Women.  Since 1994, Scoggin has been employed as a family nurse practitioner with South Central Regional Medical Center and since 1995 he has also worked with Pine Belt Mental Health Resources' Clearview Recovery Center.
In 1997, Scoggin answered the call to help out on the sidelines at Bobcat football games where he has been a fixture ever since. In addition to his work with the Bobcat football team, Scoggin also assists as needed with the other Bobcat sports teams.

Scoggin is an Eagle Scout who served as a scoutmaster for 20 years. He is an auxiliary deputy for the Jones County Sheriff's Department and a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Clinic. He has also been active in the Ellisville Rotary Club, serving as president in 1999.
Scoggin is a member of First Baptist Church in Ellisville where he is a deacon and member of the choir.
He and his wife, Donna, who chairs the associate degree nursing department at Jones, are the parents of two sons, Darren and Daniel.  Darren is married to the former Sarah Jones, who also attended Jones, and they are the proud parents of their newborn daughter, Julie. Daniel was recently married to the former Hayley Owens of Orlando, Florida.

Prometric Professional Testing Center Opens

JCJC's Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center will now feature another new service for the community.  Workforce Development Coordinator, Kelly Robinson, announced the new Prometric Professional Testing Center will officially open November 8, 2013.  Robinson said establishing a testing center will help a wide variety of professionals.

"This has been a long process but we are really looking forward to getting started," said Robinson.  "We will offer many different types of tests but to give you some examples, we will be able to offer the PRAXIS for educators, the GRE for students trying to get into graduate school, to an assortment of professional and medical tests for licensure.  There are thousands of tests available."

JCJC will also offer exams through PearsonVue, Certiport, Prometric DSST and ASE, ATI (HOBET5).  Academic test proctoring is also available (not for classes through MVCCC) by appointment.

"We try and add test offerings as requests come in from the community," said Robinson.

The Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/jcjc.atc , has been created to post information about class offerings and events at the ATC and at JCJC's off-campus locations.  Please "like" and share this page if you would like to receive that information or call Robinson at 601-477-4163 for more information.

PRVEPA Scholarships
JCJC President, Dr. Jesse Smith (pictured far left), and JCJC VP of Business Affairs, Rick Youngblood (pictured far right) were on hand for the delivery of the "Big Check" from PRVEPA's Manager of Member Services, Kurt Brautigam (pictured middle right holding check), and the Greater PineBelt Community Foundation's Executive Director, Theresa Erickson (pictured far left), and Board President, Iris Easterling (pictured far right). Two of the 36 JCJC students receiving PRVEPA Scholarships, William Folkes, (pictured middle left holding the check) and Kylie Bohannon (pictured middle right holding the check) accepted the donation.

Thirty-six JCJC students recently received almost $1,000 in scholarship money from the Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association.  The power company initiated a new program, "Round Up for Education" which allowed its members to round up their power bill and donate that change to college scholarships.  Members of the PRVEPA had to apply for the scholarship. After a year's collections, 171 scholarships were awarded. Ten percent of the $184,000 collected from the 47,000 PRVEPA members will be endowed in a fund managed by The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation, for future use.  To read the story from Teresa McCreery, click on the link: JCJC students receive PRVEPA Scholarships

Academic All-American
Nine JCJC sophomores were nominated to compete for the Mississippi, Academic All-American accolades and scholarships. Two students, Karie Mooney
and Zack Warren, were selected by the Scholarship Committee to represent Jones in the statewide competition. The distinction also makes them eligible for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society's New Century Scholars/All-Mississippi Academic Team recognition.  They will be honored with a luncheon in Jackson, in the spring.

Alumni Accomplishment-Jody Babineaux

Congratulations!!!  to 2006 JCJC graduate and former assistant JCJC Baseball coach from 2004-2008, Jody Babineaux for being selected for the Troops to Teachers honor.  Earlier this summer he was also named the Mississippi Semi-Pro Baseball Coach of the Year Award for his work with the Laurel Black Cats.

The Lake Charles, La., native was on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corp from 2000-2004, before coming to the JCJC campus in Ellisville, Miss.

Dr. Brad Harrison, JCJC Career and Technical Student Services Director, was one of Babineaux's graduate teachers at William Carey and commends him for being an excellent role model, while visiting at Homecoming.

He was stationed in Iraq for the first attack in 2003.  After graduating from JCJC in 2006, Lt. Babineaux joined the Mississippi National Guard while he was in the ROTC at USM.  Upon graduation in 2008, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Mississippi National Guard until 2010, when he was deployed to Iraq.  While serving as a Platoon Leader in Iraq, and leading a mission in 2009-2010, his convoy was attacked with an IED.  He was awarded the combat action badge and was later transferred to Mosul, Iraq, serving as a contracting and project manager officer.  In 2010, Babineaux transferred out of the Mississippi National Guard to the U.S. Army Reserve where he currently serves as the 647th transportation company executive officer in Laurel, Miss.

When he initially returned to Jones County, he said it was difficult finding a job so he taught GED night classes in Laurel, at the Pine Belt Adult Education Center.

That opportunity and his military career, led to the nomination of Lt.Babineaux for the Troops to Teachers program.  A $10,000 check was presented recently from the organization, in front of his students, to help teach a lesson.
