New College Entrance & Hwy 590 Bypass Opens

The long anticipated new entrance to the college is now open to the public.  A ribbon cutting ceremony was hosted by the Mississippi Department of Transportation in September signaling a new way to travel into the college and around the college.  The MDOT began the $12 million dollar project to extend Highway 590 over Highway 11 to Highway 29 in Jones County in October 2011.
Commissioner Tom King, Representative Bobby Shows, Ellisville Mayor Tim Waldrup, Drew Tanner from Tanner Construction, Jones County Supervisor and President, Andy Dial, Ellisville Aldermen, Stacey Clark, James Holifield and Frank Williams, MDOT District Engineer, Red Stringfellow, and JCJC President Dr. Jesse Smith led the celebration of the completed project with a ribbon cutting.
The new route should minimize traffic in downtown Ellisville as well as ease access into JCJC for athletic and community events.  The 2.5 mile long roadway and 2,000 foot long bridge was constructed by Tanner Construction Company.

Dr. Smith said, "The highway 590 project is a result of an excellent partnership over the last several years with the MDOT representatives locally and at the state level, as well as Tanner Construction Company. The investment in Jones County's infrastructure will impact more than just the students, faculty and staff who work and go to school at Jones County Junior College. Connecting three major highways in the area will enable Jones County to continue to grow, thrive, and improve safety in the Ellisville area."

The construction project connects Highways 11, 29 and 590 in addition to creating a new south entrance into JCJC.

Clarke County Center Ground Breaking

Sand flew through the air at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Clarke County Center in Stonewall, MS, September 25, 2013.  Clarke County Board of Trustees members, Coach William Boone and Carolyn Smith along with Clarke County Supervisors Darrick Marshall, Troy Smith, Paul Mosley and Mickey Long, JCJC President, Dr. Jesse Smith and East Mississippi Power Association's Randy Carroll played important roles in getting the new $1.360 million dollar project come to fruition.  The Clarke County Board of Supervisors, the Mississippi Development Authority and the East Mississippi Electric Power Association were able to secure a zero percent interest rate, USDA Rural Development grant.
Along with GED, welding, non-credit and college credit classes, the Center will be home to a unique program in the state.  An Advanced Petroleum program, complete with a drilling rig simulator and derrick, will provide hands on training for oil field industry workers. Clarke County officials are optimistic the Center will provide an education that will boost the economy in the County as well as provide more opportunities for its citizens to get an affordable education closer to home.
Albritton Construction Company began preparing the property donated by Roger Lack, Don Saxon, WarmKraft and Pine Belt Processing September 30, with plans to finish construction within 18 months.
