Hello! Alumni and Friends,
  Here's what's happening at Jones!

GE opened it's doors April 30, with JCJC playing a vital part in training its potential employees.
GE training    The Gardening Symposium debuted a collection of Coleus plants especially for Jones!
coleus group pic   JCJC vice president for advancement, Caroline Ramagos, University of Florida's professor of environmental horticulture, Dr. David Clark, JCJC alumnus Buck Anderson, and JCJC president Dr. Jesse Smith show off the twelve varieties being tested to see which will be offered to the JCJC family in 2014.

Gardening Symposium
Everything was coming up Coleus at the annual JCJC john colquhoun Gardening Symposium, sponsored by the JCJC Foundation Inc.  A unique partnership for the University of Florida with JCJC was the topic of discussion among the ladies at the symposium because the university created 12 varieties of the coleus plant especially for JCJC.
Special presentations by the JCJC Horticulture and Landscaping students and the Culinary Arts students also pleased the crowd.  Between taste testing, tips on flower arranging from the pros  and the plant sale, everyone seemed to have a great time!

Alumni Accomplishment-Michele Stover
Congratulations!  to Michele Stover of Ellisville.  She has been chosen to attend the 63rdmichele stover annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting this summer.  Her proud chemistry instructor, Rhonda Robertson says this is an international honor with graduate students chosen from among 1500 applicants, from 80 countries.
Stover is a 2008 graduate of Jones.  She completed a BS degree in chemistry from William Carey and is currently pursuing a PhD in chemistry from the University of Alabama.
Robertson explained, "Students chosen as top researchers in the field of chemistry will spend the week attending workshops where the Laureates share their work, etc.  There are also opportunities for small group meetings with the Laureates.  Not only is it a huge honor to be chosen to attend this international conference but the timing has to be perfect to be at the right stage of your graduate research as your area (of study) cycles through."
The international meeting of the worlds' brightest chemistry graduate students and Nobel Laureates takes place in June according to to Stover.  She shared Robertson and her daughter inspired her to reconsider chemistry as her major.
"Originally I was a pre-med student majoring in psychology. I did not have a good first experience with chemistry in high school, but I survived with help from Mrs. Rhonda and Kaci," said Stover. "At Jones, I did work study for Mrs. Rhonda both years and had her as a teacher for both semesters of general chemistry. When it was presented to me in a different way, I realized that I truly enjoyed studying chemistry and my interest in the subject increased. After much thought, I realized the only reason I was pre-med was because I wanted to cure people of diseases. The more I studied chemistry, the more I realized this field was the perfect job for me to do that," said Stover.
We'll have more from her in August when she returns from the the 63rd Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany.
Alumni Accomplishment-Mike McClellan
Congratulations!  to Mike McClellan on his recent induction into the mcclellan Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame.  Besides being a long time supporter of the college and the Board of Trustees Chairman, the Heidelberg native was a standout football player and track star at JCJC in 1962-63.
He played for Hall of Fame coach Sim Cooley in 1962-63.  After a 5-5-1 season, the Bobcats improved the next year, posting a 7-3 mark. However, they came up just short in claiming the South Division title when they lost their final game to Pearl River, 20-13.

McClellan received many postseason honors, including Most Valuable Back in the league, and he was named All-State, All-Region and JC Grid-Wire All-American as a quarterback. He was the first player under Coach Cooley to be named All-American.

McClellan becomes JCJC's10th inductee into the MCJC Sports Hall of Fame. He joins Sim Cooley, Joe Flowers and A.B. Howard (Class of 2007); Randall Boone and John Perkins (Class of 2008); Gene Tullos (Class of 2009); Gwen Magee (Class of 2010); L.D. Ready (Class of 2011) and Parker Dykes (Class of 2012) in the elite group.

Alumni Accomplishment-Dr. Joan McCoy
Congratulations!  to Dr. Joan McCoy for being elected president of the National Association of the Academies of Science.  The NAAS works closely with the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science- the publisher of Science magazine) in developing science policy. Dr. McCoy njoan mccoyotes that the AAAS is the largest scientific organization in the world and it was founded by Benjamin Franklin!
Dr. McCoy said, "The NAAS is a force that influences scientific policy on the national level and I am directly involved on a professional level. This is made possible because JCJC supports its faculty in professional organizations such as this."

One of the major goals of the NAAS, Dr. McCoy explained is to promote the forty-four state member academies and support the state Junior Academy of Science programs.  The AJAS is sponsored by the NAAS which initiated these organized meetings beginning in 1964.

"Our Nation's most dedicated and truly serious college/K12 instructors meet with NAAS. This organization provides the forum in which our nation's best high school science research instructors and their students  are honored in the presence of and are allowed to interact with the scientific community whose career paths they wish to follow."
Dr. McCoy began her college education at JCJC in 1969 and left for 17 years before returning to graduate in 1986.  She earned her BS in Biology from USM in 1989 and entered graduate school in biochemistry. The Sumrall native returned to JCJC in August of 1994 to begin her teaching career.

The 14th Annual JCJC Alumni Association Golf Tournament held Friday, April 5, at Dixie Golf Club was a huge success!  Caroline Ramagos said the food, fellowship and fun-raising was excellent among the full field of golfers and donors. million dollar shot barnetts
The Magnolia Real Estate's million dollar hole-in-one contest turned out to be interesting too.  Tommy Barnett's name was selected but he was unsuccessful in his attempt to win the million dollar prize his mother's company was offering.
From everyone in the JCJC Alumni and Foundation Office, THANK YOU!!! for all of the donations because the proceeds fund JCJC scholarships.
