Alumni Help Sandy Victims
katie herrington staten island police and stacy ruth JCJC Athletic Director, Katie Herrington and Social Science instructor, Stacy Ruth, both JCJC alumni, braved cold temperatures to warm the hearts of victims of Super Storm Sandy over the Christmas Break.  They joined a group of area residents and students going on behalf of the Jones County Baptist Association for an eight day trip to Staten Island, New York to help with disaster relief.
"For me it was an opportunity to give back and help others. But in the end, I was the one who felt blessed that I was given the opportunity," said Herrington. "Matthew 5:16 says, 'Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.'  I hope that was the case, and hopefully, our help brought some hope to those who are going through such a tough time."
Ruth said the work was exhausting both mentally and physically but worth it.  The 12 hour days brought hope she said. "It was very rewarding to see the desperation in people's eyes disappear after you work so hard for a few hours and offer them hope.  I was so sore, but too tired to care. I am so proud that the the Southern Baptist Association took the initiative to work on these types of projects and I am especially proud to have worked with college students on such a worthy cause," said Ruth.

Outlook on Jones
anderson hall addition Looking across the campus visually you will notice a few changes; more green space and more construction! While there is some construction taking place on the main Ellisville campus several of the counties in our eight-county district will be hosting grand openings soon.  Wayne County residents will be hosting the next ribbon cutting with Clarke and Jasper Counties preparing for new buildings!  The new Centers, like the one in Greene County which opened one year ago, was designed to make education more accessible.

OTHER BRAGGING POINTS

*JCJC has its largest class of engineering students ever with 80 freshmen and 140 total students majoring in this math and science dominated field.

*Electrical Technology students graduating with a one-year degree are getting entry level jobs starting at $95,000 with 100 percent placement.  Students with a two-year degree start out at $110,000.  Jobs paying these kinds of salaries include off-shore drilling rigs.  Locally, entry level positions pay $12-18 an hour.

*Taco Bell is expected to open in the former game room once we receive equipment from the franchise. Students should see a grand opening late this spring.

Coming later this spring....

Jones On Demand will be a new option for students/professionals who want to take eight week credit and non-credit courses on demand, any time during the semester.

Operation JumpStart is a new program housed in Workforce Development that is geared toward providing more hands on training for potential entrepreneurs wanting to launch a new business.  Instead of getting just business counseling and 'homework', like developing a business plan, this new program will walk participants through the process step-by-step, with the option of offering the course over several weeks or in a couple of days. It is specifically for low-income, unemployed displaced people with the hopes of growing the economy by providing new jobs and businesses.  Business sponsorships will hopefully offset the cost of the course.
