JCJC Bobcat Math League
The JCJC Math department took on a new challenge this fall by implementing a Math League by expanding the traditional one-day Math Bowl the college hosted for the last three years to an eight week competition.
Instructors divided the 20 participating schools into divisions and traveled to the Pine Belt schools to hold weekly math competitions, just like an athletic event. In the end, the top five teams in the division, and three 'wild card' teams battled it out in the Super Bowl of Math.  Competition was fierce and the top two teams fought it out until the final question.

Carl Monk Highway Dedication
  Carl Monk Highway Dedication

The Mississippi Department of Transportation recently dedicated a stretch of Highway 11 in Jones County in memory of former Laurel Police officer for 22 years, Jones County Sheriff's deputy/investigator and former JCJC campus police director and drug education and criminal justice instructor, Carl Monk.  He was also the JCJC Director of Campus Safety for almost one year.
Monk went to Jones County Junior College in 1967 on a football scholarship. One of Carl's favorite lifelong memories was that of being a part of the football team in 1968 when it was named the National Junior College Football Champions. He returned to JCJC in 1971 to earn his A.A. in Business Administration after serving in the Vietnam War. The "Jefferson 'Carl' Monk, Jr. Memorial Highway" begins at the intersection of Hwy 11 North and Magnolia/Eratta road and extends to its intersection at the Jones/Jasper County line.
JCJC Most Beautiful is daughter of alumni

JCJC freshmen and newcomer to the pageant scene, Erica English from erica english Friendswood, TX, won the JCJC Most Beautiful completion. She beat out 28 young ladies competing for the title and the tiara. Most proud that night was her parents, not just because she won, but also because both of her parents, Craig and Tara (Thurman) English attended JCJC.

"My mom and dad both grew up in Jones County," English said. "Mom went to West Jones and Dad went to Northeast Jones. They both went to JCJC and Mississippi State. Daddy also played baseball for the Bobcats."

English said that she has looked forward to attending Jones for as long as she can remember. After growing up in Columbus, MS, her family moved to Friendswood four years ago.

"No matter what part of the country I was living in, I knew I'd go to school in Mississippi," she explained. "My mom had always told me that I would go to junior college before I went to senior college, and the first place I always thought of was Jones. I've had my heart set on coming to Jones for years and I'm very happy to be here."

When she was younger, English often visited her grandparents in Jones County, Florence Thurman and the late Jerry Thurman.

"My grandparents used to take me to the JCJC cafeteria on Sundays for lunch," she recalled. "There's even a scholarship here in memory of my papaw."

In addition to being crowned Most Beautiful, the judges named her Most Photogenic.

"Winning the pageant means a lot to me, especially since it's my first pageant," she said. "My parents flew in from Texas the night before to see me in the pageant and I'm so glad they didn't waste a plane ticket. My family was so proud. My mammaw shows everybody at the bank pictures. I'm really glad I get to represent Jones as Most Beautiful 2012!"

The Lair yearbook staff hosts the annual JCJC Most Beautiful Pageant as a fundraising event; however the judges are representatives of the Miss Mississippi organization.
