A Word from Your Chapter President

Happy Summer to All, At the June membership meeting, the Executive Board proposed the new FY14/15 budget to the membership for approval. This budget allows our chapter to continue all of the projects and funding of programs. We are fortunate to be able to provide the support to all of our local communities and are known nationally for this support.
I was honored to represent our chapter last month at the Public Education Foundation luncheon at the Venetian. This event honors all high school seniors who are receiving scholarships from private organizations. Our chapter recognized four outstanding students with college scholarships and having a chance to talk with each of them about their goals and aspirations was very rewarding! We will be inviting these students to our July chapter meeting for everyone to meet.
The temperature isn't the only thing heating up as the final push for the EduCode class descriptions and schedule is underway and must be finalized by July 1. Even though EduCode is not until March 9-13, 2015, preparation began immediately following this year's event. Should anyone have any thoughts or ideas about the classes we offer or schedule of events, please let me know as soon as possible.
June's chapter meeting with the Structural Engineers Association of Nevada was very successful and their President asked if we might consider doing a joint meeting again in the near future. 95 members from both associations attended and the expert panel was outstanding! Thanks to Majid Pakniat, Werner Hellmer, and Kent Barber for providing their expertise and assistance in creating an outstanding event!
Steve DiGiovanni is asking for volunteers to formulate sub-committees for the code development activities for our chapter. The code proposals for the 2015 Group A codes are due by January 15, 2015. If you are interested, please contact Steve at (702) 455-7103.
Thank you, Al Ellis Chapter President

Public Outreach

The Chapter's Public Outreach Program has made great strides in providing a number of community outreach programs, and its level of involvement is far and above the most it has been in years. Giving back to the community is its' goal each year, and the Chapter is extremely proud of providing funds for a number of local programs and causes that provide a better foundation for the industry. For the year 2014 we anticipate donating close to over $50,000.00 dollars.The Chapter is a major participant in a number of programs:
- UNLV Solar Decathlon Stakeholder-DesertSol;
- High School Technical Training Program;
- Toddler Swim Grant Program;
- Clark County High School Scholarship Program;
- And of course....EduCode
We always need and welcome volunteers for upcoming programs. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Public Outreach Chair: David Goldstein of GeoTek, 702-374-6043 or dgoldstein@geotekusa.com.

| Greg Franklin CBO Retiring

Greg Franklin, the Assistant Director of the Clark County Building Department and a Certified Building Official, is retiring after almost 30 years of devoted service to Clark County. His last day of work with the County is July 14, 2014. In his role as Assistant Director, he managed the Plans Exam, Engineering, Inspections, and Administrative Code Enforcement Divisions of the Department. Greg joined the Building Department in Clark County in 1985.
Greg has served as the President of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Conference of Building Officials. He also served on the Building Official Certification Committee and the Education Committee of the International Code Council.
Greg founded and developed EduCode, a nationally recognized educational seminar designed for building code professionals, serving as its chairman for the first seven years. This week-long seminar is attended by national and international code professionals and is recognized as the premier code technology presentation in the United States. It currently nets in excess of $125,000 annually for the local chapter, allowing for the membership to attend national business and code development programs; provide sponsorship of local pool safety programs; and provide sponsorship of four collegiate scholarships to local students pursuing professional engineering or architectural degrees.
Greg was recognized by the Chapter at the June 2014 meeting to a full room in attendance and presented with a gift certificate as a token of appreciation.
Greg's expertise and dedication will surely be missed. ICC wishes him well on his retirement.

EduCode 2015

This is a busy time of the year for the EduCode Committee. We are working hard to nail down our classes, instructors, contracts and schedules for EduCode 2015. All information must be submitted to ICC by July 1, 2014 in order for the brochures to be printed and available for the 2014 ICC Annual Business Meeting. The work on EduCode is a year round process which actually starts the week after the past EduCode ends, so there is little time for rest and the need for volunteers increases. Thus, if you are interested in working on the EduCode committee, let me know. I can be reached at (702)267-3911.
