A Word from Your Chapter President

Good Morning,

Although the spring and summer months are typically slower months for the chapter, numerous activities are keeping us busy.

As the thermometer is rising, and more people are using swimming pools, your Chapter's Board of Directors have been presenting Toddler Swim Grant Lesson checks for $1500 to all Southern Nevada jurisdictions.  The reception has been overwhelming!

The Public Outreach committee is busy finalizing the scholarship program as the presentations for the recipients is coming later this month. The Board is also working on the proposed budget for 2015 which will be presented for approval at the June Chapter meeting and the EduCode committee has been meeting regularly as all courses and instructors for EduCode 2015 must be submitted to ICC to complete the brochure by July 1.

So, as the slow times turn into the fast and busy times, we welcome everyone to volunteer for a committee, activity or position. It is only with the commitment of our volunteers that the chapter continues to be successful.

Thank you for everything you do,

Al Ellis

Chapter President

Public Outreach

It's May and the Public Outreach Committee gets to roll up their sleeves and get to work. It is a very busy month for us, some of the highlights are:

Toddler Swim Grant Program

Grant presentations are underway, early May we made the first $1,500.00 presentation to Pahrump.  Coming up in May are similar presentations to: City of Las Vegas, City of North Las Vegas, Boulder City and Mesquite.  Keeping in mind that our Grant for last year gave over 225 Toddlers and Parents the opportunity to learn how to swim. Also, a Grant to the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition will be made to Mr. Greg Blackburn the Chairman of SNCDPC in the amount of $3,500.00 on May 21st.

It appears the efforts of SNICC and SNCDPC are beginning to payoff. As noted in an article published in the Las Vegas Sun on May 11th, 2014, the drowning rate for Clark County fell to a new low of 2.05 deaths per 100,000 in the Toddler age group.

High School Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Sub-committee has met, and has chosen 4 local High School students to be the 2014 Awardees of SNICC Scholarships, each in the amount of $3,000.00. The formal presentation will be made at the Venetian Hotel on May 27th, where we will actually meet the students and make the presentation.  For the first time we are also working with the Clark County Public Education Fund (CCPEF) in awarding some additional scholarships to continuing students. These awards will be made later in the year.

Other programs that the Committee is working on are:

- Building Safety Month in May
- High School Technical Training Program

We always need and welcome volunteers for upcoming programs.  Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Public Outreach Chair: David Goldstein of GeoTek, 702-374-6043 or dgoldstein@geotekusa.com.

  Building Safety Month 2014

To help raise awareness of building safety, the southern Nevada jurisdictions will be celebrating Building Safety Month during May 2014. Building Safety Month is a public safety awareness campaign to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe, resilient, affordable and energy-efficient homes and buildings.

EduCode 2015 is well under way.  The kick-off meeting was a great success in April and we received some valuable feedback from our committee members as well as from Soaring Eagle on what we can do to continue to innovate and make EduCode a fantastic success.  Our first large milestone is to complete the brochure by July 1.
