Happy Spring to All!!

With March in the rear view mirror so goes EduCode 2014! Your Executive Board would like to thank all of our volunteers who worked together to make this year's event another huge success! Since everyone has had two weeks to rest, the 2015 EduCode 'kick off' meeting is scheduled for April 16, at 2:30 PM at the Moser Building in Henderson for anyone interested in participating.

The Executive Board participated in the April's Pool Day event at Wet and Wild on April 1st and presented the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition with another contribution to help prevent any future drownings in our community. We are also preparing to present our seven local jurisdictions with grants to support their efforts to teach toddlers how to be safe in the water.

With Building Safety Month approaching fast our Public Outreach Committee is working diligently on preparation for delivering our messages throughout the Valley. Again, we are always looking for volunteers interested in assisting in all of our activities, so please contact me with your interests!

Have a great month!

Very Sincerely

Al Ellis

ICC President Visits Students at East Tech

Mike Teemant Stephen Jones Fausto Vega

On Monday, March 10th, students in East Tech's Construction Technology Program sat in the lecture hall to listen to Stephen Jones, President of the International Code Council.  He had travelled from New Jersey to Las Vegas to conduct business and made a special stop to visit Mr. Vega and Mr. Litz's 10th through 12th grade construction classes. Michael Teemant, 2nd Vice President of the Southern Nevada International Code Council (SNICC), also attended.  The SNICC provides funding for the high school ICC program for East Tech's Construction Technology Program.

Mr. Jones discussed the importance of the International Residential Codes (IRC) and the building codes by historical and current catastrophes. The examples used were those where buildings and whole cities had been destroyed due to negligence by individuals and accidents caused by creatures and nature. He further explained how code was constantly evolving because of events where individuals were injured and killed. Mr. Jones shared that building codes not only protect the residents in their homes but also that codes protect people in public places.  In summation, he stated that building codes save lives.  He asked students if they were interested in a career as a building inspector, which is in high demand, and quite a few students expressed interest.  Upon conclusion of his speech, Mr. Jones toured East Tech's construction lab and was impressed with the caliber of the training program.

East Tech is the first school in the state of Nevada to pilot the ICC high school residential code program.  It is a flexible educational program divided into four parts: building, plumbing, HVAC (mechanical) and electrical.  This year, 96% of Mr. Vega's students passed the building code exam and one senior, Ruby Lemus, scored 100 percent!  Students will receive a nationally-recognized Certificate of Achievement (COA) from ICC.  The program increases students' proficiency in building codes while they work toward becoming an ICC Certified Code Professional.

Educode 2014 Success!!

Educode 2014 Logo

EduCode 2014 was a fantastic success.  We received a great amount of positive feedback about the event, the classes, and the availability of certification testing.  Next year, we will continue to strive to make EduCode, the best opportunity for education nationally.  They say that "many hands make light work" and this is especially true with a large event like EduCode. We rely on our volunteers to ensure this yearly event's success.  Our kick-off meeting for EduCode 2015 will be April 16, 2014 at 2:30 PM at the Moser Building in Henderson (2101 Moser Dr, Henderson, NV 89002).  We look forward to seeing you there!

Valerie Loper Attains MCP certification
Immediate Past President, Valerie Loper, recently attained the notable distinction of Master Code Professional (MCP).  Per ICC, the MCP is the highest level of certification the Code Council offers. Of the thousands of individuals that the Code Council certifies, only a select number have attained this highest level of achievement, currently just over 700 individuals. This special group is awarded the gold-colored Code Council lapel pin in addition to the MCP Certificate. To obtain this level of certification requires and demonstrates commitment to the profession, diverse knowledge of codes, and a high level of self-initiative.  Congratulations Valerie!

Nick Moriarty Named in the 40 Under 40
