A word from your Chapter President

Happy New Year to everyone!

This being my first address as your Chapter President, I would like to express how proud I am to have been given this opportunity to lead our Chapter into 2014. The Board of Directors would also like to express our sincere thanks to outgoing President, Valarie Loper who has helped to establish a strong and sound foundation for the future of our Chapter.

Our Executive Board and I will continue to work hard to meet the challenges and obligations that await us this year. All of our committees continue to be hard at work and we welcome all interested volunteers to get involved, as our chapter is only as strong and vibrant as the people who make it that way!

Our chapter is recognized and known nationwide as being an innovator and leader in many areas such as EduCode, with 2014 being our seventeenth year, the High School Internship Program, College

Scholarship Program, Code Development representation among numerous other programs that we remain very active in. I look forward to help keeping our chapter in the forefront of national recognition.

If anyone has any concerns, suggestions or issues I urge you to contact me personally at 702-267-3911 as this type of communication can only help to strengthen our chapter.

Very Sincerely,

Al Ellis

Chapter President

PRESS RELEASE FROM CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

How Construction Technology Students Use ICC Codes

The Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council (SNICC) is a partner with East Tech's Construction Technology Program.  Michael Teemant, 2nd Vice President of the SNICC, spearheaded the effort to provide resources for students to study residential codes during their junior and seniors years. East Tech was the first high school in the state of Nevada to pilot the residential code program.  It is a flexible educational program divided into four parts: building, plumbing, HVAC (mechanical) and electrical.  Students completing all elements of a part, including a final exam, will receive a nationally-recognized Certificate of Achievement (COA) from ICC.  Last year, 32 East Tech seniors received a COA.  The program increases students' proficiency in building codes while they work toward becoming an ICC Certified Code Professional.  http://www.iccsafe.org/gr/Pages/HSTTP.aspx

In October, Mr. Vega asked his seniors to work in small groups to build a set of three stairs without having any prior knowledge of the code requirements.   continued here

A Thank You Letter to the Chapter

As the 2103 year closed, so does my term as Industry Member, Director at Large.  I want to thank those who gave me the opportunity to fill the role.

I would have liked to stay and continue to serve on the Board, but my work load is such that it makes it difficult to fulfill the commitment.  I am passing the torch, and allow someone who has the desire to carry on, and continue to help the Chapter move forward.  I will stay as active as possible in the Chapter, but must relinquish some of my duties, to those willing to take them on.

Again, thank you for the opportunity.  It was truly an honor to serve on the Board of Directors of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council.

Respectfully,

Ray Finkel, RD, LEED BD+C

Bergman, Walls & Associates
