A word from your Chapter President

Chapter Membership,
This last month was very successful for the Southern Nevada Chapter. We have entered into a contract with Swan and Gardiner to perform an audit for the 2012 year. I am hoping that this task will be completed before the next Chapter meeting, I have requested that Mr. Swan provide the membership a report of the findings.
The Executive Board created an annual budget for the fiscal year 2013/2014. This task was completed and voted on at the Chapter Meeting in August. There were substantial increases in the annual budget that reflects the desire of the Chapter to see more attention in the form of Grants and Scholarships.
We also performed a thorough update of the ByLaws and got the Chapter Membership approval at the last Meeting.
We are looking forward to representing you at the upcoming ABM in Atlantic City, and will provide a complete report as we return.
Thank you for your participation.
Valarie Loper
Chapter President

Nevada Energy Code (NRS 701.220) and its Applicability to Nevada Design Professionals
(From Nevada State Board of Architecture, Interior Design and Residential Design)
The board has recently received many inquiries from Nevada architects regarding the recent decision by the City of Las Vegas to relax its energy efficiency standards by exempting commercial buildings constructed before 2009 from the city's energy code (Bill No. 2013-24).
NRS 701.220 is an absolute directive from the Legislature that all local jurisdictions must adopt and enforce the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Now that the City of Las Vegas has adopted Bill No. 2013-24, the board's registrants may find themselves caught between complying with state law (NRS 701.220) and the broad exemption for all structures built in Las Vegas before 2009. What is a responsible registrant to do under these circumstances?
The registrant would need to advise the client that there is an exemption process...

Southern Nevada Chapter - ICC donates to UNLV's Team DesertSol
On August 30, 2013, SNC-ICC was honored at a formal press Team Send Off event for DesertSol; UNLV's entry to the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon 2013.
As part of the event, they announced all of the donors and their sponsorship levels. The Southern Nevada Chapter - International Code Council (SNCICC) was honored as we committed to donate $25,000. Don White and David Goldstein were in attendance to make the presentation.
Don has committed to assist the students in navigating through the permitting process, with the City of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD), etc. He held a meeting with the LVVWD (Springs Preserve where the house will end up), the student leaders, and design professional mentors to work out the inspection documentation that is required to be submitted to the Solar Decathlon event coordinators in Irvine.
Don also explained our Chapter's commitment to the promotion of education in the "Built Environment", thus driving our support. To help the Team meet their goals, and work through the "red tape" of the permit process and funding, the Chapter presented a check in the amount of $20,000, with the remaining $5,000 held in reserve to pay permitting fees. Upon completion of the permit process, any remaining balance will be provided to the UNLV Foundation.
Part of the fees slated to be funded by the Chapter is the "Net-Zero" LEED Platinum Certification by USGBC. The USGBC has indicated that it will by giving our Chapter an Honorary Lifetime Membership!
