A word from your Chapter President

Chapter Members,

It's already April and so much has been done.  As promised I have created a survey for you the membership to fill out. Please take time to answer these questions that will give your Executive Board a more clear understanding of the direction you would like this Chapter to go.

This next month I will be updating the Strategic Plan, and making necessary changes to the Chapter By Laws.  This will be available for your review next month.

Building Safety Month is right around the corner and so is the
"Multi Jurisdictional Residential Amnesty Program". This program will help the community by making residential compliance available to homeowners that have self disclosed non permitted construction that falls within the scope of the program.

We have submitted numerous letters for the 2015 ICC ABM. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Thank you for allowing me to be of service

educodeEduCode 2013 "UPDATE"

EduCode 2013 is in the history books! I would like to personally thank everyone who took time away from their busy schedules to volunteer for EduCode. This year was another success as we had over 2600 class days and over 800 students register from over 30 different states. We have received feedback from numerous people and the overall comments were exceptional.  As you know, EduCode relies on its volunteers to work as a team and create a positive atmosphere for all participants, which at times seems overwhelming.

When issues arose, we acted quickly and professionally which was noted by numerous people and distinguishes us from other programs.  We even had a movie producer walking around for three days and he couldn't believe how well everything ran.  Each and every one of you was instrumental in helping this year's program as only with your commitment and dedication could we have succeeded!

I would also like to extend our appreciation to the Building Officials, managers and direct supervisors who allowed us the time to participate in this program.  It is their level of commitment to this endeavor that allows EduCode to prosper.

Al Ellis

EduCode Chair

Remember, the committee is always looking for volunteers to help with planning and the actual execution of the program.  Get in on the ground floor for EduCode 2014!  If you have any feedback that can help to improve the EduCode experience, please contact Alan Ellis at alan.ellis@cityofhenderson.com.

High School Building Code Program Meets Presidential Challenge

An established training program supported by the International Code Council addresses a presidential challenge to meet the demands of a high-tech economy. The High School Technical Training Program teaches high school students the importance of building codes and provides graduates with an advantage in the job market.

The challenge is to redesign America's high schools so they better equip graduates for the demands of a high-tech economy. Schools will be rewarded to develop new partnerships with colleges and employers, and create classes that focus on science, technology, engineering, and math-the skills today's employers are looking for to fill jobs.

"Mastering building science, technology, engineering and math is a must for a successful career in working with building codes to create safe structures," said ICC Board Vice President Stephen Jones. "Technology includes new building materials and products, cdp ACCESS-the online code development process of the future-plan review, permitting, and digital codes and standards."...

Our story from last month...

The Public Outreach Committee is needing assistance with the High School Technical Training Program. We need at least three mentors that can help at each of the technical high schools to implement this program.

This year we will be sponsoring as many as five schools for this great program. We need someone that can keep in touch with one school and help keep us apprised for what they may need in the line of speakers, materials and any other assistance that they may need to implement the program that we are sponsoring.

Mike Teemant has volunteered to help continue working with the East Career and Technical Academy. David Goldstein has volunteered to continue working with the North Career and Technical Academy

The High School Technical Training Program (HSTTP) was put together by ICC. This program allows high schools to provide training and certificates, for students, so that they can have a leg up in their chosen construction field. The HSTTP is designed to give instructors the most flexibility, while introducing the building codes to students in the environment of construction instruction. This is not only beneficial to the students that are working towards the construction trades, but also those that are working on design of the built environment. The more involved that the chapter can be in supporting this program locally the greater success the students will have.

For more information about this program you visit www.iccsafe.org

If you would like to have any information on becoming a volunteer and adopting the school please call Mike Teemant at 809-5688 or email at MikeTeemant@Gmail.com.

Threat
Threat to the IECC!

In conjunction with my Building Official, Chris Knight I am sending this message in hopes we can get a throng of attendees to the May 1, 2013, Las Vegas City Council Meeting at the new City Hall.

Summerlin City Councilman Bob Beers (a tea party libertarian who, by the way, is also running for re-election) has decided that the International Energy Conservation Code is oppressive and anti-business and not at all necessary to be adopted or enforced.  He is drafting a motion to not only not consider adoption of the 2012 IECC with our amendments, but also to rescind the adoption of the 2009 IECC, which we have been enforcing for several years.

He has convinced City Councilman Bob Coffin, a normally centrist politician, to support his motion.

Along with Chris, I attended a meeting with Councilman Beers and City Manager Betsy Fretwell a week ago in an effort to clear up any misconceptions that have obviously arisen in Mr. Beer's mind concerning what this code means and how it is enforced, as well as our legal obligations to the state and federal government to enforce the provisions of this code.  It was obvious that he had many misconceptions.  It was also obvious that not too much of what we related to him really seemed to matter.

He has set time on the May 1 city council agenda for open floor debate/discussion regarding the pros and cons of this "oppressive, broken" code.

I don't think I need to explain to any of you the ramifications of this motion.  Not only would it be in direct confrontation with Nevada State law, but would be a violation of the city and state's agreement with the federal government in receiving ARRA stimulus grant funding.  It would also have a huge impact on the city's reputation and its ability to obtain future grants and funding from these and other sources, which is not only vital to our state and local economies but also would have a direct economic impact on the design, development and construction industries of this valley in the near and far terms.

I am therefore asking each and every one of you to please;

  1. Forward this to any and all interested parties so that they may be aware of this issue, and have them contact to me per the information below so I can add them to the contact list,
  2. Set aside time from your very busy schedules to attend the May 1 council meeting in support of this code (the council does count the butts in the seats),
  3. If you or they are city residents, contact your council representative to insure they understand the seriousness of this issue and where you expect them to stand on it.

The basis for sustainability and the future of livability for our city and region depends on it.

Thank you.
