Joe Bonner: Denver musicians, Gov. John Hickenlooper remember the late jazz legend
Sam DeLeo, Reverb Denver Post, 11/28/2014 1 Denver musicians and Gov. John Hickenlooper remember Joe Bonner, the internationally known jazz pianist who died at the age of 66 on Nov. 20. Photo courtesy of Travis Broxton. Piano legend Joe Bonner, who worked with giants from the jazz world on over 40 albums, passed away in Denver on Nov. 20. The coroner reported he died in his sleep from heart disease. He was 66. Bonner was an internationally renowned pianist who was born in the same town of Rocky Mount, N.C., as Thelonious Monk. He played with jazz masters like Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Harper, Harold Vick and Max Roach. He had a distinguished roster of albums as a leader, as well. And though the above gives context to his accomplishments, it doesn t tell all of Bonner s story.
| Joe Bonner - Benazir, Benazir - Cherry Sound | Denver was Bonner s adopted home on and off for decades after he arrived in 1976. I didn t know Joe well, but, starting in the early 90s, I saw him play often at clubs and after-hours jam sessions, and occasionally ran into him at Capitol Hill bars. No one else matched his symphonic style of playing. Beyond his technique, Joe was a complex composer and relentless in pursuit of his aesthetic.

Equity Tries to Influence Show Tours
|
By PATRICK HEALY NOV. 25, 2014 NY Times CHICAGO - Some of the sets looked flimsy, the acting was uneven, and the signature red wig needed bounce. But none of that mattered to Lilly Hickman, 6, as she watched "Annie," presented here by Broadway in Chicago, a booker of national musical tours. Lilly burst into applause after "Tomorrow," and she giggled like other kids in the majestic Cadillac Palace Theater when the evil Miss Hannigan croaked, "How nice," after learning that Daddy Warbucks wanted to adopt Annie. "This show makes me so happy!" said Lilly, who is missing all her front baby teeth but is old enough to have saved 37 Playbills from other musicals. "I love Annie because she's like me." How so? "Really smart!" she said. When a child is this giddy, does it matter that the production is nonunion, lacking much of the panache of a Broadway-caliber show - even if the tickets (topping out at $142 for "Annie") are Broadway-caliber prices? Fusing rock, country, folk, R&B, blues and traditional Mexican sounds for forty years, Los Lobos have emerged from their self-ascribed status as the "soundtrack of the barrio" to become household names. Their debut may have been called Just Another Band from East L.A., but they've proven again and again that they aren't "just another" anything. True to form, the rockers are returning to their roots to perform an intimate, career-spanning acoustic set that sheds new light on old favorites. If Los Lobos has learned one thing in nearly four decades together, it's that playing by the rules is not for them. They tried it for a while, said no thanks, and they've been better for it ever since.
Colorado Symphony Presents concerts may not feature the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Members. These are presentation concerts only at Boettcher Concert Hall managed by the Colorado Symphony Association.

 | Stephanie Cheng |
Englewood Arts Presents critically-acclaimed pianist Stephanie Cheng, whose "interpretive imagination" (The New York Concert Review) and "finely honed sense of style" (Martin Berheimer, msnbc.com) has earned her a place among the top tier of today's concert pianists.
The program features Beethoven's grand Sonata No. 4, Op. 7, an epic work at 28 minutes, lending an orchestral sound to the solo piano. Following are two contrasting works by Chopin: the wistful Ballade No. 1 in G minor, and the iconic, restless Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66. The piano's color palette is further explored with Ravel's playful Jeux d'eau and Debussy's haunting The Girl with the Flaxen Hair. Precious Poison!!
|
By DMA member Rod Taylor allaroundseniors.net
A long way from Colorado, far back in Ontario Canada, there's an area called Kawartha Lakes. It's basically a semi rural farming area dotted with little towns and lakes, great fishing in the summer, and it's where I was born and raised. My home town was called Bobcaygeon. It used to have a population of eight hundred or so and swelled to quite a few more in the summer tourist season. Down the road about fifteen miles, there was another picturesque little place called Omemee Ontario. You can gather from the sound of these names that they're pretty heavily influenced by the local Indian populations. Once again, Omemee is just a wide spot in the road with a population around thirteen hundred where another kid with wild music dreams grew up. His name is Neal Young. We've never met although I would certainly welcome the opportunity and as far as I know, our musical pathways have never crossed. It seems a little odd to me that we've gone all these many years and many miles without meeting, and in some ways our music tastes are miles apart. Yet, in listening to his music and all the articles I've read, there are areas where he and I are in total agreement and could not be more aligned. One of them is our mutual distaste for what is taking place in northern Alberta and the development of the Canadian Tar Sands. The Alberta Tar Sands is one of the largest oil deposits in the world. According to some, it runs third behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Where it is number one though, is that it is the most highly acidic, toxic goop you could ever pull out of the ground and it's toxicity is the stuff legends are made of.

California Port Truck Drivers End Misclassification Strikes: Union, Company Resume Discussions
|
Posted: November 24, 2014 by laborradio By JoAnne Pow!ers On Thursday and Friday, Los Angeles and Long Beach port truck drivers supported by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters ended eight days of strikes against five employers who have now agreed to meet with union officials. The primary concern of the drivers is their misclassification by employers as independent contractors. International Vice President Fred Potter serves as Director of the Teamsters' Ports Division: [Fred Potter]: "They're not independent contractors. Most of them, they lease a truck from the employer. They have no independency at all. They can't drive that truck for any other customer. All their terms and conditions of employment, what they're paid, they have no say in. The hours they work, the loads they pull, that's all determined for them. They pay all the cost of operating the business. They pay all the fuel, all the tolls, all the repairs to the truck. The fact of the matter is we have a number of these drivers who worked a fifty, sixty or more hour week, and ended up with a negative paycheck." At the request of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, the workers and the companies returned to the table for discussions the Teamsters Justice for Port Truck Drivers Campaign characterized as "productive". Potter says that as long as their meetings remain productive, the drivers will continue to work: [Fred Potter]: "If those talks break down, we're gonna use whatever lawful, economic means we can use, including the right to go on strike. I don't like using the word 'never', it's all about negotiations...and where people are misclassified, we don't feel we have any latitude. The companies have to comply with the law. Those workers must be properly classified."

These 7 companies spent more on CEO pay than federal taxes
|
Firms reported more than $74 billion in profits last year, and received a combined total of $1.9 billion in refunds from the IRS.by Laura Lorenzetti fortune.com NOVEMBER 19, 2014
Seven of the country's 30 largest corporations doled out more to their chief executives last year than to Uncle Sam. These seven firms reported more than $74 billion in profits last year and received a combined total of $1.9 billion in refunds from the Internal Revenue Service, according to a study, giving them an effective tax rate of negative 2.5%. The findings are part of a report from theCenter for Effective Government and the Institute for Policy Studies. The twoWashington, D.C., think tanks have published an annual study called "Fleecing Uncle Sam," which looks at CEO salaries and corporate taxes, since 2010. The U.S. corporate tax rate is 35.3%, according to federal law. The reality is that most large corporations' pay a far lower rate. Large American companies pay an effective corporate tax rate closer to 12.6%, according to the Government Accountability Office. Essentially, a host of items can lower a corporate tax bill, such as write-offs for research and development costs, or the depreciation of buildings and equipment. Read On

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
