"The Trans-Siberian Orchestra" is coming to Denver and Colorado Springs
|
...and local musicians contracted to play will receive about $550 below scale. The "The Trans-Siberian Orchestra" is hiring local musicians for a rehearsal and two performances at the Pepsi Center (18,000 seats) on November 15. The group will then travel to the World Arena in Colorado Springs (8,000 seats) for two performances on November 16.
Total pay per musician for all 5 services: $450
Had this show been booked at DMA Scales,
each musician would then receive $1011.40
Accepting work below scale takes money immediately out of your pocket, but worse than that, it fuels a race to the bottom that can only damage our local industry for years to come.
DMA put out a call to Steve Trudell, who is the national contractor for this show. As may be expected, Mr. Trudell has not returned our call.
The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has put out an advisory warning that Trans-Siberian Orchestra" and "Mannheim Steamroller" are both avoiding union agreements both locally and nationally. Tour itineraries are linked below:

Unemployment Tax Issue Has Raised It's Ugly Head Again
Posted November 13, 2014 Colorado Music Business Organization (COMBO)
Last year several musicians contacted us because the CDLE [Colorado Department of Labor and Employment] was asking them as "Leaders of the Band" to pay in Unemployment Taxes for their band members. Now we all KNOW that musicians are always unemployed. So while the CDLE would be collecting some funds, we're pretty sure they'd be paying out more than what they would collect. But, THANKS to our good friend, supreme musician and teacher, Chris Daniels helped us with a way to decide if YOU need to be paying in unemployment taxes. Here's what he had to say: Read On

 | Stephanie Cheng |
Englewood Arts Presents critically-acclaimed pianist Stephanie Cheng, whose "interpretive imagination" (The New York Concert Review) and "finely honed sense of style" (Martin Berheimer, msnbc.com) has earned her a place among the top tier of today's concert pianists.
The program features Beethoven's grand Sonata No. 4, Op. 7, an epic work at 28 minutes, lending an orchestral sound to the solo piano. Following are two contrasting works by Chopin: the wistful Ballade No. 1 in G minor, and the iconic, restless Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66. The piano's color palette is further explored with Ravel's playful Jeux d'eau and Debussy's haunting The Girl with the Flaxen Hair. The program concludes with Liszt'sMephisto Waltz, which evokes a wild, rustic dance, and was originally composed for orchestra. California Walmart Workers Sitdown Strike: Sit Down, Live Better!
|
Posted: November 13, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham Walmart workers at a store in Los Angeles California sat down in store aisles carrying signs with tape over their mouths bearing the word "Strike". The workers are protesting Walmart's low wages and illegal intimidation and retaliation against workers trying to form a union. The workers are demanding at least $15 an hour and the right to unionize without Walmart retaliation. Here's one customer's reaction supporting the strikers. [Walmart Customer]: "Do the right thing! F**k Walmart!" After sitting for awhile holding their signs in the store the Walmart sitdown strikers walked out as they came in - together. [Walmart Sitdown Strikers]: "Stand up! Live better! Whose Walmart? Our Walmart! Which side are you on Walmart, which side are you on? Which side are you on Walmart, which side are you on? Whose Walmart? Our Walmart? That's right!" Tyfani Faulkner is one of the Walmart sitdown strikers. [Tyfani Faulkner]: "They can afford to pay us more. We feel like we deserve more. All we want is fifteen dollars an hour and consistent full-time and respect. It's important for us to tell Walmart and to show other associates that we have a voice. You can't just treat any kind of way and think that it's OK." Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, says "We cannot continue to allow our country's largest private employer to pay workers so little that they can't put food on the table for their families and then punish those who speak up about it.

My Two Years at Walmart
|
In my two years working at a Walmart in Florida, I learned a valuable lesson: The Waltons, who own Walmart, got richer while the workers who helped build their fortune suffered. I saw it every day. I remember trading stories about not being able to pay bills and what it's like to have power and lights disconnected at home. There were times I couldn't even afford food for my lunch break. And I wasn't the only one. That's why Walmart workers across the country stepped up last month to call on Walmart to publicly commit to $15 an hour and a full-time schedule. Workers are taking huge risks-like being arrested or going on strike and holding a sit-in in Los Angeles today-to protest retaliation for speaking out for better wages and hours. They're tired of living in poverty and being bullied out of talking about it, while employed by a billion-dollar corporation. Sign the petition now to tell the Walton family you support the workers' call for $15 an hour and a full-time schedule. The Waltons are the richest family in America, with more than $150 billion in wealth and as much money as 43% of America's families combined. Yet they refuse to listen to workers about the struggles they face every day. Trust me, $15 an hour and access to full-time hours would make a major difference for a lot of hardworking people who work at Walmart and their loved ones. And there's no reason that it can't be done. The Waltons just need to stop being so greedy and give workers a fair share for helping to make Walmart successful. For all of my former co-workers at Walmart, I'm not going to rest until the Waltons come to their senses. That's why I signed this petition to let the Waltons know I'm standing with Walmart workers as we protest the company's illegal attacks on workers who dare to stand up for a better workplace. And if they continue to ignore us, then I'll be joining protests outside of Walmart on Black Friday. Join me to take a stand! Sign the petition to call on the Waltons to publicly commit to paying their workers $15 an hour and giving them access to full-time schedules. In Solidarity, Kevin ------------------- Kevin Banatte AFL-CIO digital fellow and former Walmart worker in Florida

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
