Arts organizations are hiring pros to tell their stories
|
By Peggy McGlone October 31 The Washingto Post In a dramatic shift in the way cultural institutions communicate with their audiences, arts groups across the country are increasingly cutting out the middleman and publishing news stories written by in-house journalists. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra published a story on its Web site about young composers using crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, while the Web sites of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center featured profiles of pianist Yuja Wang and actress Tovah Feldshuh. The tactic acknowledges a basic truth of the information age, arts leaders say. "We can't wait to be written about anymore," says John Schreiber, president and chief executive of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. "We as arts presenters understand that we can't depend anymore on third parties to tell our stories." Read On

Ron Jolly - New CD Release
|
 | Ron Jolly |
The Friend Suite by The Ron Jolly Trio has just been released on Tapestry Records. The album features Ron Jolly on piano, along with Ron Bland on bass and Don Newby on drums, showcasing Ronšs compositions in a superbly performed and recorded musical statement. The songs are in a variety of jazz styles and evoke a wide range of feelings. The Friend Suite is dedicated to friendship and memorializes some of Ronšs closest friends. Choosing the musicians for The Friend Suite was easy. When Ron decided to make a trio record, he picked these musicians because hešs made all kinds of music with them over the last 35 years. łWe know each other musically, in such a way that many of our actions while playing are intuitive and in the moment. We rehearsed a few times. We discussed the overall feel and some of the kicks, but otherwise my goal was to create and capture the music in one of my favorite settings, the piano, bass and drums trio. They just knew what to do! Several of the songs on The Friend Suite are dedicated to individuals who made a huge contribution to Ronšs life. Other songs reflect various characteristics or key aspects of the feelings engendered by deep friendship. Stylistically, the songs cover a varied set of styles including hip hop, boogie, straight ahead, floating, joyful, exhilarating, and calypso. The Friend Suite is the result of two years of creation. The songs came out of doing something to keep busy and trying to recover from the loss of a couple of musician friends, a high school friend, a junior high school friend, Ronšs uncle and his brother-in-law. These events proved to have far-reaching and earthshaking effects on Ronšs life. The Friend Suite is the first CD released By The Ron Jolly Trio since 2001's Live at the Christmas Tree. In the intervening time, Ron has pursued a variety of activities including performing, recording, teaching and composing in the Denver, CO area. The Friend Suite by The Ron Jolly Trio is available online from Tapestry Records, CD Baby and directly from Ron. Downloads are available from all the major digital music services. For more information please contact: Ron Jolly at ronjolly@compuserve.com Tapestry Records: http://caprirecords.com/store Quotes: "Ron Jolly and friends. I love this new CD!!!!!!I I really really enjoyed it from start to end. You guys are flippen' awesome. Please pardon the language...yes I said flippen' !!!" "I have been listening to it several times and really enjoying the vibe!" "Very thoughtful, heartfelt and well written."

Spring Ahead - Fall Back!, by Rod Taylor
|
By DMA member Rod Taylor Posted on November 5, 2014 So here we go again, one of my least favorite weekends of the whole year! Yep, it's that time when we turn our clocks back one hour so that we can sit in the dark half the time and freeze the other half! I suppose I ought to be grateful that all things considered, there will be a spring to pray for, but unless you're someone who likes rolling around in the snow (which I'm not,) wintertime is one slow, cold, freezing, plodding day after day followed by Valentines, followed by income tax day, followed by Easter, and then VOILA! SPRINGTIME AGAIN! Who invented daylight saving time? Does anyone really know? I heard once that daylight saving time was some kind of a government device they came up with so that farmers would have more time between sunup and sundown to do their endless chores. I don't know if that's true or not, but as someone who was raised a farm kid, it should tell you a little something about farming as an occupation! In addition to all my doom and gloom, as though we didn't need another reminder that we're looking at a good many short days and long nights before we can wear thongs and cutoffs again, we're also up against my other least favorite time of year, midterm elections.

With Two Political Parties For Bosses, Is It Time For One For Workers?
|
Posted: November 6, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham Is labor's political path forward paved with Democrats or should workers finally form a viable, credible national political party of our own? A vital question given that Democrats failed to come through for labor on signature issues when a newly elected Barack Obama had a Democratic congress from 2009-2011 and still failed to enact the Employee Free Choice Act labor law reform, no serious infrastructure funding, no full employment and no comprehensive just immigration reform. Instead working people got a health care reform law modeled on conservative Heritage Foundation ideas with no real public option, never mind a single payer universal system. Anti-worker trade policies were also pursued. Some grassroots labor activists say labor needs a serious debate about whether to abandon the failed strategy of spending millions of dollars each election cycle relying on Democrats. Imagine if labor used its electoral ground game and political money to build a real labor party. Labor seems to lose while Wall Street gains regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans are in control. Polling from Gallup and CBS shows majorities of Americans believe the economic system favors the rich and that a new party should be formed.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
