James Brown documentary on HBO
"Mr. Dynamite," upbeat and tuneful

By Joanne Ostrow
Denver Post Television CriticPosted:  10/21/2014 11:15:23 AM MDT1
"Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown" is a documentary on the legendary performer produced by Mick Jagger. (Provided by HBO)

Put your hands together for the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, the guy  who earned it long before Mick Jagger vied for the title, and welcome a new documentary on James Brown debuting Oct. 27 on HBO.

"Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown" leaves the artist's decline to another day. The film glosses over the turbulent aspects of Brown's personal life (domestic abuse charges and an arrest record are mentioned in passing), and it isn't  comprehensive (there's nothing about his four wives, six children, drug addiction or his death in 2006). But the tuneful feature-length film is packed with great vintage clips.

Philadelphia Orchestra reports on 'a remarkable year'

By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic
philly.com The Inquirer
Posted: October 21, 2014

Since the Philadelphia Orchestra exited bankruptcy more than two years ago, several key financial indicators have brightened. Obligations associated with the orchestra's Chapter 11 settlement have been paid off, income from concerts is growing nicely, and annual fund-raising is improving more than nicely.

"It was really a remarkable year," board chairman Richard B. Worley said at Monday's annual meeting of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association at the Kimmel Center.

As part of its recovery plan, the orchestra established a "bridge/recovery/transformation" fund, and fans have come to the rescue. Since the 2009-10 season, $69 million has been raised for the transformation fund, with $6 million more pledged (in addition to regular annual fund-raising). The support has been critical, as the transformation fund covers the gap between income and expenses. In other words, without it, the orchestra would have been running enormous deficits for each of the last several years.

Englewood Arts Presents: CONCERT FEATURING SPHERE ENSEMBLE
Date:  Saturday ~ October 25, 2014
Time:  2:00 PM

Venue:  Hampden Hall (located on the 2 level of the Englewood Civic Center)*
Englewood Arts Presents welcomes the Sphere Ensemble for its premier performance in Hampden Hall. Now in their fourth season, Sphere is a dynamic group of talented young musicians performing without a conductor. Energetic, interactive concerts seamlessly flow from classical to rock, jazz to jive, fiddle to fusion, breaking down barriers between the audience and musicians.
Sphere Ensemble
Sphere Ensemble

The program:
PIAZZOLLA: Concerto Hommage à Liége for bandoneón and guitar
JANACEK: Suite for Strings
Plus a delightful mix of dynamic and original musical arrangements

Featured Musicians:
Evan Orman, bandoneon
Patrick Sutton, guitar

A Tango nuevo exploration of harmony and rhythm, Concerto Hommage à Liége by Piazolla runs the gamut from bitter loss to lighthearted romance. Though the solo parts are sometimes performed on two guitars, EAP is excited to present the work in its original instrumentation. By turns lyrical and percussive, this double concerto is sure to delight.

Janacek's Suite for Strings, a sensible and charming work, dates from the composer's early period (1877). The Suite's movements were initially named for the Baroque dances which were its influence, but these designations were later abandoned by the composer when he realized they did not fit the forms of the dances.

In addition to these two works, Sphere will also present a crowd-pleasing assortment of arrangements, including the Michael Jackson classic Thriller, Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers, and Hallelujah by Leonard
Cohen.

Hundreds of Thousands Of British Workers March To Demand Higher Pay
win logo Posted: October 19, 2014 by laborradio

By Doug Cunningham

Hundreds of thousands of British workers took to the streets over the weekend to demand higher wages. The protest was organized by Britain's Trade Union Congress. Canada's Radio Labour featured comments from some of the workers who protested for higher wages.

[British Workers]: "Hi, my name is Barb and I'm marching on October 18th because I'm a retail worker and I earn way below the living wage. And to me sometimes it's a choice between heatin' my house and feeding my family."

Second Worker: "I'm marching on the 18th of October to voice the anger of young people who are currently shuffling from zero hour contracts, insecure employment and low pay."

Third Worker: "I'm marching on October the 18th because I'm living to work, not working to live."

Fourth Worker: "I'm goin' on the march in October because I'm sick and tired of low pay, no pay rises for us. We're strugglin' to make ends meet day after day. We deserve a pay rise."

Golden Gate Bridge Workers Poised To Strike Friday
win logo Posted: October 16, 2014 by laborradio

By Doug Cunningham

Golden Gate Labor Coalition workers planned to strike Friday, barring any last minute labor contract settlement. Bus drivers say they will honor picket lines if a strike happens. The unions representing 450 workers were in a bargaining session with the Golden Gate Bridge District Thursday. The Golden gate Labor Coalition's Alex Tonnison.

[Alex Tonnison]: "We definitely don't like the fact that we're gonna impact commuters in a negative way and no one wants to do this. But it comes down to if the district doesn't want to come to a reasonable agreement, then we have no other choice and this is kind of a last resort."

The district wants to increase health insurance costs for workers while the unions want no health care cost increases. The unions say they have fallen 12 percent behind the Bay Area cost of living so they want four percent raises in each year of the three year contract.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
