Randy Weeks dead at 59: He brought Broadway to Colorado
|
 | Randy Weeks |
By Ray Mark Rinaldi Denver Post 10/09/2014 Randy Weeks, president of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the man in charge of bringing Broadway to Denver, died Thursday in London. He was 59. Weeks was in England attending the Independent Presenters Network conference. The cause of his death is unknown. "We are shocked," said DCPA chairman Daniel L. Ritchie. "He was here since the beginning. He and his team were really so respected nationally." Weeks began his tenure at the center in 1978, working in the box office. He left to attend school and eventually returned in 1989 to head up Denver Center Attractions, the division that presents touring musicals. In all, he oversaw 400 productions in Denver. Read On

Sept. 29 Membership Meeting - Welcoming Rigorous Discussion with Open Arms
|
By Pete Vriesenga, President Denver Musicians Association
Twenty-nine members and six board members attended DMA's September 29 General Membership Meeting to discuss and ultimately adopt substantial changes to Article III (Duties of Officers) and Article IV (Salaries and Remuneration) of our DMA Bylaws. This meeting was yet another step in a two-year, multi-meeting process of necessary dues increases, cost-cutting and restructuring that have now brought DMA's budget closer to balance than it has been in decades. Salary adjustments for the President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer were a hotly-debated subject throughout the evening, as they should be. Per the Boards proposal salaries for these three positions are increasing, but only because of a realized 20% cost savings since the DMA no longer providing health benefits. Job descriptions and duties are also changing to bring greater efficiencies with office administration while simultaneously ramping-up our focus on organizing and member recruiting. The Board Proposal was presented on Three Ballots so that officer duties, board duties and officer salaries could be debated and voted on separately and anonymously. Voting results were as follows: Ballot 1 (Duties of Officers) YES: 25; NO: 3 Ballot 2 (Duties of the Board of Directors) YES: 28; NO: 4 Ballot 3 (Salaries and Remuneration) YES: 24; NO: 7 Several members asked in advance if the right to vote on these proposals could be extended to the entire membership via email or electronic ballot? Unfortunately a general ballot is not possible in this example because the outcome must be decided at an open meeting that allows for rigorous discussion as well as possible amendments. In this example we saw both. So, not only is a live meeting required, but it becomes essential when there are many moving parts that require discussion and airing of opinions that will certainly influence the outcome. Most importantly, your elected officers need this opportunity to listen to you. We hear your request to make membership meetings more accessible so they can accommodate varying teaching and work schedules. For this reason we ask DMA members to respond to this brief SURVEY to see if there are better days, nights, mornings or afternoons that will make our meeting more accommodating. This survey will likely continue as a fixture in this bulletin through the rest of this year, so please take a brief moment to respond. If you can't attend membership meetings we then encourage you to attend and bring your concerns to DMA Board meetings which will now occur [at least] monthly. These meeting times will be posted in this bulletin and on the DMA website. Our next board meetings are now scheduled for Monday, November 17 at 1:00 PM and Tuesday, December 30 at 1:00 PM. Be sure to stay for our Holiday Party that will go from 4 to 8 PM on December 30. In my view the most important question of the evening was "what are you [DMA officers] doing to recruit young members"? The DMA and all of organized labor will have an uncertain future unless we address this issue in a very big way. There is no question that young professional musicians are reluctant to join and this is a serious problem across the AFM. However, this generation of professionals are quite resourceful and have taken notice of DMA's ongoing efforts to press for accountability with public funding, collective bargaining and even our 100 years of establishing and defending prevailing wage. These efforts have a reach and benefit that extends well beyond our membership, and thankfully, a substantial group of twenty-something musicians took notice in the Fall of 2013. They came to us after the DMA pressured the Downtown Denver Partnership to "pay something" to the 100 bands that performed earlier that year for Make Music Denver. We opened our doors to them and subsequently hosted multiple meetings with this group through last winter. We now hope to reconvene these meetings in November. I've asked Luke Leavitt to again serve as the chairperson (see below to read Luke's latest commentary Westword). Our initial goal is for DMA to assist in the building of a collective business model, both locally and nationally, for this next great generation of professional musicians. Please call the DMA or contact me directly if you have friends, students or relatives who may be interested in joining this focus group. Please click on the following link if you wish to view the Meeting Minutes. In closing, THANK YOU to all who attended our 9/29 meeting and please come again! Leave/Read Comments

Musicians Are Often Exploited in Denver: Here's What We Can Do About It
| By Luke Leavitt Sep. 25 2014 Westword
 | Luke Leavitt |
Many musicians are accustomed to playing for free, especially those who don't have a large following. The joy of it, as well as the promise of exposure, often suffice as a reward. But this can cause consternation for serious or professional artists who spend hours upon hours honing their craft. In the economy of live music, when is it appropriate to not pay someone for her creative labor? My own experience suggests there is no clear answer. Overall, musicians enter into business relationships at a disadvantage, and not paying musicians treads a fine line with their outright exploitation. But I've also come to learn that there are many instances when playing for free seems acceptable. So, how do we tease out the difference? It can be hard to codify exploitative behavior. I'd suggest as a starting point that when other people profit from the presence of live music but the musicians themselves don't receive compensation, they are being exploited by definition: their labor generates value that disproportionately goes to other people.

Englewood Arts Presents, 10/25
| Englewood Arts Presents: CONCERT FEATURING SPHERE ENSEMBLE Date: Saturday ~ October 25, 2014 Time: 2:00 PM Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2 level of the Englewood Civic Center)* Englewood Arts Presents welcomes the Sphere Ensemble for its premier performance in Hampden Hall. Now in their fourth season, Sphere is a dynamic group of talented young musicians performing without a conductor. Energetic, interactive concerts seamlessly flow from classical to rock, jazz to jive, fiddle to fusion, breaking down barriers between the audience and musicians.
 | Sphere Ensemble |
The program: PIAZZOLLA: Concerto Hommage à Liége for bandoneón and guitar JANACEK: Suite for Strings Plus a delightful mix of dynamic and original musical arrangements Featured Musicians: Evan Orman, bandoneon Patrick Sutton, guitar A Tango nuevo exploration of harmony and rhythm, Concerto Hommage à Liége by Piazolla runs the gamut from bitter loss to lighthearted romance. Though the solo parts are sometimes performed on two guitars, EAP is excited to present the work in its original instrumentation. By turns lyrical and percussive, this double concerto is sure to delight. Janacek's Suite for Strings, a sensible and charming work, dates from the composer's early period (1877). The Suite's movements were initially named for the Baroque dances which were its influence, but these designations were later abandoned by the composer when he realized they did not fit the forms of the dances. In addition to these two works, Sphere will also present a crowd-pleasing assortment of arrangements, including the Michael Jackson classic Thriller, Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers, and Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Trumka: 'Raising Wages Will Be a Driving Force at the Polls'
|
 10/08/2014
Jackie Tortora
AFL-CIO Now
As working people are gearing up to get out and vote Nov. 4, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka had this to say on one of the top issues on people's minds:
Raising wages will be a driving force at the polls in the approaching midterm elections. Working people will turn out for candidates who support solutions that will make a difference in the real world-from raising the minimum wage to ensuring that all workers can bargain collectively and make a livable wage. The labor movement stands in strong support of the broad campaign to bring attention to raising wages leading up to and following Oct. 10 [a national day of awareness about raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour], and it's our responsibility to keep it going.
Labor is perfectly positioned to unite a massive movement, to raise wages and to lift up our communities. We have an opportunity to show every elected leader, from the White House on down, that those who stand proudly with working families will win in November. It's that simple.

We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians. We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available. Feel free to drop by and check us out, or check out milehighcommunityband.net for more information. E-mail mjlucas@aol.com if you have other questions!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
