Atlanta Symphony Musicians Press Statement
Press Statement 9-23-14
Atlanta, GA September 23rd, 2014

The ATL Symphony Musicians deeply regret management's unnecessary decision, instead of ending the lockout, to cancel opening night and the first six weeks of the ASO's 70th Anniversary season. ASO management has not returned to the bargaining table with the musicians and refused to even discuss a play and talk agreement as the musicians proposed. They clearly aim to starve out the musicians and break our will.

The ATL Symphony Musicians will respond to this cancellation in the manner we know best - with world-class symphonic music - the type that won Atlanta 27 Grammy Awards.

Beginning this Friday evening, September 26th, the musicians will begin to hold free concerts for Atlantans. The concert this Friday night will be at the Kennesaw State University's Bailey Performance Center. We will hold two back-to-back concerts, at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. These concerts will replace a previously planned concert of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at KSU on the same night. (See program details below)

The public concerts of the ATL Symphony Musicians will welcome guest conductors and guest artists from around the world who stand in solidarity with the Musicians in their struggle to preserve Atlanta's world-class, Grammy award winning Orchestra.

In addition, the ATL Symphony Musicians Foundation http://www.atlsmfoundation.org/ http://www.atlsmfoundation.org/ will immediately begin fundraising to pay for more free concerts for the public. For as long as the lockout is in place, each time the ATL Symphony Musicians Foundation raises $30,000, the Foundation will fund a free public concert. Donations of any amount can be accepted online at http://www.atlsmfoundation.org/ http://www.atlsmfoundation.org/. The ATL Symphony Musicians Foundation will also accept contributions from corporations and philanthropists who want to sponsor special public concerts featuring the ATL Symphony Musicians.

This Friday's program will include works of Dvorak and Beethoven conducted by renowned Maestro Michael Palmer, a familiar and beloved part of the history of the orchestra, having started his career in Atlanta with Robert Shaw over 40 years ago. The Musicians are grateful for the opportunity to perform in the face of the WAC's unconscionable effort to put a lockout in place rather than the Orchestra in its place on stage for its 70th season.

The ATL Symphony Musicians will also perform a dress rehearsal at 4pm on September 26th in the Bailey Center, exclusively for the students and staff of Kennesaw State University.

Admission is free; donations will be gratefully accepted for ATL Symphony Musicians.

Denver Public Library Concert Series - Taking Applications for 2015

Fresh City Life ConcertsDear Musicians and Friends of Musicians,

As many of you know I am the concert curator for the Fresh City Life Concert Series at Denver Central Library. I've enjoyed working with many of you across the Front Range area doing performances, producing Five Points Jazz Festival and booking our series at the Denver Library. (Those of you new to my newsletter are performers I've worked with...so I hope you don't mind being added to my list so I can keep you updated with gig opportunities and goings-on!)

Fresh City Life is now offering nearly 80 concerts per year (performers are always paid and concerts are always free to the public!) and I am getting ready to book for 2015.

I would love to hear from you if you are interested in performing for us. If you have already submitted recently, please feel free to send me a reminder note now that I am beginning to book. I love having great performers come back and share their latest work with our audiences, so let  me hear about what you are working on this year! Put me on your newsletter lists so I can keep track of you, too!

Write to me at marta@martaburton.com with a brief description of your work and offerings along with a link to your website, current hi-resolution photos and video or audio that represents your music.

I love being a part of this great community of musicians! Please stay in touch!

Marta

P.S. Our recent marketing & copy writing class at the Denver Musicians Association was so thrilling for all of us that we are planning more workshops to help performers book more work, more often! Stay tuned.

LABOR & POLITICS

And Justice for All
Rod Taylor By Rod Taylor, DMA member
September 24, 2014

When I was a kid, I grew up on an Ontario farm just outside a gorgeous little town in the Kawartha Lakes called Bobcaygeon. It was a beautiful little place that owed a lot of its revenue and survival to Yankee dollars supplied by Yankee tourists who came up from the USA every year for some R&R, the fishing, the beauty of the land and the lakes, and if nothing else, just the opportunity to get out of the big cities like Detroit or Chicago or Dayton Ohio. Those folks all seemed kind of magical to me because they all seemed to have money and big cars and I didn't have a nickel. Furthermore they all talked about living the good life while I spent my days in the hot sun baling hay or chasing cattle or fixing fences or any other dirty job it seems like farming consists of which seemed like total injustice to me. Those days were also the beginnings of Rock & Roll, a totally magical time and music screamed through my veins like high octane

CNN Ordered To 'Make Whole' 300 Union Workers Fired 11 Years Ago

By Doug Cunningham

[Jim Joyce]: "We believe that this is the largest back pay case in the history of the National Labor Relations Board. Conservatively tens of millions of dollars in back pay and for people to be made whole for the loss of benefits and some of the conditions that were contained in their union contracts. People should think long and hard about whether the company that claims to be the leader in providing news is a good leader when it comes to being a corporate citizen. Their actions clearly state otherwise."

NABET-CWA union President Jim Joyce, talking about CNN. CNN is appealing an NLRB ruling ordering the rehiring of 100 union workers and compensating about 200 others for back pay and lost union contract benefits dating back eleven years. The NLRB found CNN's anti-union actions to be illegal and also ordered CNN to begin bargaining with NABET on a new labor contract. CNN is appealing the decision in federal appeals court

[Jim Joyce 2]: "The National Labor Relations Board will go to court to have their decision enforced. We're optimistic that we will continue to have the outcomes that we've had in the two previous forums. But the people that are really suffering here are the 300 or so workers who had their lives upended by CNN's actions back in 2003 in Washington and early 2004 in New York City."

Joyce says this case screams out for meaningful labor law reform to get faster judgments for workers. He says NABET-CWA will be picketing in front of CNN headquarters Wednesday in Washington, D.C. and Friday in New York.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
