Building Power Through Social Media
| by Matt Plummer, Organizer, AFM Organizing & Education Division
 | Matt Plummer |
In the last decade, overall use of social media has skyrockeded. People spend almost 2.5 hours a day on average using Facebook Twitter, and Instagram. Many musicians have tapped into social media to build their audience, create stronger relationships with fans, increase recording and merchandise sales, distribute their music, and boost ticket sales. Throughout much of the music world, it's now conventional wisdom that musicians must heavily engage with social media. At the same time, rank-and-file workers are increasingly leveraging these tools to build collective power and make their voices heard. And musicians are no exception: from orchestra members, to freelancers calling for better instrument carry-on rules, to recording musicians, to the indie artists of the Content Creators Coalition. Colorado Symphony drops the tuxes, brings in drinks, and more pop music
| By Ray Mark Rinaldi Denver Post 9/02/2014 Remaking itself for a more casual era of concert-going, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will dress down its musicians and end a long-standing policy of forbidding patrons to bring cocktails into the performance hall. The orchestra also announced Tuesday that it is taking on the role of concert promoter, an aggressive business move that will have it producing a new lineup of non-classical events. The "CSO Presents" series will feature big and small names in popular music, including a stop of the long-awaited reunion tour between jazz masters Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea in March. The changes start as the new season kicks off Sept 18, with Beethoven's Ninth on the program and without the male musicians in the tuxedos they have worn since the city's orchestra began playing in 1934. Instead, they will wear black suits - black jackets, ties, shirts and pants. Female musicians will have the same all-black dress code they've long had, which allows them to choose between dresses and skirts or pants. "It's an overdue change, honestly," said Anthony Pierce, the CSO's vice president of artistic administration. "We're always talking about how to make ourselves as accessible as possible and this is one way." Read On

Say It Fast, Make Them Want It, THANK YOU presenters and attendees
|
THANK YOU Chris Loffelmacher and Marta Burton for presenting a unique and informative seminar at the DMA entitled: Say It Fast, Make Them Want It: Performers' Guerilla Marketing Workshop: Sexy Copy & Great Publicity Photos. We look forward to more of these presentations in the weeks and months ahead.
Comments from attendees: The odds I'll have wildly positive things to say about any class I attend are, er, slim, so this note is an unusual one. Well, you weren't part of the group at the Denver Musicians Association Referral Service Local 20- 623 Afm, and I'm here to tell you, you missed out. Chris Loffelmacher + Marta Burton brought the PR learnin. The content was customized for musicians, but for the only non-performer in the room, it was totally applicable to businesses promoting products. In fact, stepping outside of the typical marketing-ese made it fresher, more relevant and just better. All of us asked them to take this show on the road; when they do, you need to get your butt in a seat. You'll be so glad you did.
Ellen Daehnick
Marta and Chris, Thank you very much for the great class last night. I feel blessed to have met two kindred souls eager to help me meet my goals. I look forward to a continued friendship. A couple of things. One, I personally thought when I signed up for the class that the wealth of material you were presenting would take more than two hours. So I would not have been deterred had you listed the class as being two and a half or three hours in length. The point I was trying to make last night was that I get hung up at times doing self-promotion. Then I realize that once I reach the stance of "witness" or "observer" I can write about myself in glowing terms without feeling self-conscious. I am simply speaking the truth and I have confirmation from others that what I am saying about myself is accurate. To get hung up about self-promotion is as much being caught in the ego as spouting off about myself in an ego-centric way. I'm having a little difficulty putting this thought into words. I'm heading upward to do some fly fishing and hiking, even if I have to do it in the rain. I will be in touch next week. Thanks again for the loving kindness you gave us last night. Clay Kirkland

Welcome to the Whopper Stopper!!
|
By Rod Taylor, DMA member September 3, 2014
The little bee picks the blossom
The big bee gets the honey
The black man picks the cotton and
The white man gets the money...
...TAKE ME BACK TO TULSA...I'M TOO YOUNG TO MARRY...
Those words, from an old Bob Wills tune, sang the truth to me the first time I heard them as a kid, and they're still singing it to me today. The trouble with truth is, nowadays, it comes in almost as many shades as there are colors in the rainbow and evidently, depending on whose side of the truth you're on, it can change and disappear on you equally as fast.
The point being made here is a simple one and I'll try not to elaborate too much. If you're someone working hard every day, struggling to pay your bills and working like hell just to stay even, then the rules of society are made for you and that's your truth. You already know what they want you to do. Obey everything, say nothing, pay your taxes, keep your nose clean and shut the hell up!

Fast Food Rallies in More than 150 Cities
| Kenneth Quinnell AFL-CIO NOW 09/04/2014 Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) was among numerous people arrested as fast-food workers and their supporters rallied in more than 150 cities on Thursday. Thousands of workers walked out of restaurants and picked up picket signs, demanding that big restaurant chains pay them a living wage of $15-per-hour. Home care workers also participated in the strikes. Moore was arrested in West Milwaukee, Wis., and other arrests were made in New York City, Detroit, Chicago and elsewhere. "I take great pride in supporting Milwaukee workers as they risk arrest in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow for their families," Moore said in a statement. "I've read their letters, I've heard their calls and I've listened to their stories. I understand their struggle, but more importantly, I see their drive to fight for a future that is equal to their talents and worthy of their dreams." AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka expressed support for the strikers:

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
