Jerry Kern Has Made a Lot of Noise With the CSO, But Can It Survive Discord With the City?
By Joel Warner Westword Wed., Aug. 27 2014 at 8:53 AM
As the brass quintet launched into a sweeping rendition of an old Hollywood score, camera crews captured the historic action. This was one of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra's controversial Classically Cannabis fundraisers, possibly the first-ever symphonic marijuana celebration anywhere -- even if the private event, held at the posh new Space Gallery on Santa Fe Drive, was for the most part unremarkable. There were no psychedelic numbers squeezed into the quintet's program of jazz and ragtime favorites, no noticeably pot-fueled shenanigans from the several hundred well-dressed attendees as they sipped wine and socialized.
Out on the gallery's open-air patio, though, patrons were free to smoke the marijuana they'd brought for the occasion -- and from the media's perspective, that was all that mattered. Reporters in attendance made note of the marijuana boutonnieres pinned to many of the guests' chests, the special green neckties the musicians wore for the occasion. Such details would end up in the New York Times, the Times of London, even on TMZ.
This was far from the first time the symphony had turned heads -- and it won't be the last. Read On
50th Anniversary - Beatles Perform at Red Rocks
'Those fab Beatles' Fans remember Beatles' 1964 tour, Red Rocks show By Melinda Mawdsley The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction Friday, August 22, 2014
It was a whirlwind tour, 25 concerts in 33 days, as the Beatles crisscrossed the United States, popping in and out of Canada during the band's inaugural North American tour in the summer of 1964.
Although the Beatles first arrived in the United States in February 1964 to play the "The Ed Sullivan Show" and a couple East Coast concerts, the group didn't stay stateside long.
But the Beatles returned in August for a real tour, starting Aug. 19 in San Francisco and finishing Sept. 20 in New York City, hitting the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 23 - the Beatles played Carnegie Hall in February - leaving one jewel in the trio of venues the band had heard so much about.
On the afternoon of Aug. 26, 1964, the Beatles landed via a chartered flight at Denver's Stapleton Airfield to play a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and left Denver nearly 24 hours later. What happened in between can only be described as frenzied and historic.
AFM President Blasts NFL Super Bowl Halftime Kickback Scheme
August 21, 2014
AFM President Ray Hair
New York, NY - In what could be deemed the most colossal pay to play scheme ever, the National Football League (NFL) has reportedly asked potential Super Bowl halftime performers if they would be willing to pay the league to play at its big game. "It's not like the NFL and its Super Bowl organizers don't have any money and can't afford to pay for halftime show performances, it's about the insatiable thirst for profits at the expense of great musical entertainment and those who create it. You can find kickback schemes like this coming from unscrupulous bar and nightclub owners, but for the NFL to descend to such depths would be unconscionable," said American Federation of Musicians International President Ray Hair.
The AFM will bring the matter up for discussion with the AFL-CIO's Department of Professional Employees which includes representatives from all US art and entertainment unions, including the NFL Players Association.
Though the NFL doesn't usually pay the performing halftime acts, this seems to be a new low. The NFL has reportedly shortlisted its choices for next year's Super Bowl halftime show to Rihanna, Coldplay and Katie Perry, and was also reported to have requested a portion of post-show tour earnings to secure the booking. A 30-second TV commercial cost $3.8 million and there were 45 minutes of advertisements during the game. The league's annual revenue is more than $9 billion, and Commissioner Roger Goodell says he would like to reach $25 billion by 2027.

Say it Fast! Marketing Workshop
Date: September 4, 2014, 6:30 - 8:30pm
Dear Creatives, I can't tell you what a huge difference it makes to venues when you can provide fantastic copy and photos for your performances! It can truly create more regular work for you doing what you love!
So please join me and Chris Loffelmacher at the DMA and find out how you can book more work, more often with great copy and photos. If you have a tough time writing about what you do, we're going to change all that! In this guerilla marketing workshop you'll learn how to package your performance vitals so that the information is a click away - and you won't dread that moment every time you are asked to send a write up and photos for an upcoming event.
Attend this workshop and you'll leave with a three to four line description of your concert or event, tips and descriptors for future events, examples of great publicity shots to promote your performances and a solid understanding of the differences between a calendar description, a program listing, a bio and a press release.
BONUS: Workshop attendees will also have access to reduced price photo shoots with my favorite photographer, Aidan MacKerracher.

LABOR & POLITICS
Richard Trumka Has a Question for You this Labor Day
08/25/2014
Jackie Tortora
AFL-CIO Now
Labor Day is coming soon and this year, like we do on every Labor Day, we will pause to recognize the incredible achievements of America's workers. We will gather in communities to march in parades, host barbecues and celebrate all who make this country run. But we also should recognize that despite our sweat, our sacrifice and our innovation, too many families are struggling and unable to get by.
No one should work for a living yet struggle to support a family. But some of the fastest job growth is occurring in such low-wage industries as fast food and retail, which is why more families feel like they are struggling to keep up with living costs. These same industries are least likely to pay a living wage or provide basic benefits like earned sick days and holidays. This means many of America's workers can't afford to take the day off if they get sick. And they certainly can't afford to take a day off to care for a family member in need.
We're seeing working people in states and municipalities all over the United States joining together to pass an increase in the minimum wage above the federal $7.25 an hour.
>>
How would you or someone you know be affected if we raised the federal minimum wage? Share your story by texting LABOR to 235246, and it could appear on theAFL-CIO Now blog.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
