Trio Of Nonagenarian Musicians Proves 90 Is The Best Age For Creativity

NEW YORK (AP) - There's an upcoming concert at Baruch College, but it has nothing to do with students. The performers are in their 90s, and one is even older than the Manhattan school founded in 1919.
Pianist and composer Irving Fields, who turned 99 last week, will perform a show Monday night dubbed "90 and Going Strong" at the college along with Emmy-winning entertainer Fyvush Finkel and clarinetist Sol Yaged, both 91. The concert celebrates their passion and commitment to music and live performance despite their age.
"I call myself 99 years young. Age is just a number," Fields said in an interview. "Music keeps me younger. ... I play 10 notes, I'm 40 years younger. I play a whole concerto, I'm like Benjamin Button!"
The trio's concert will be their second in a month at the 175-seat Engelman Recital Hall in the Baruch Performing Arts Center. Tickets cost $35.
"It was so successful. It was jam-packed," Fields said of their first show.

Hudson Gardens and Events Center has a long, established history of hiring professional musicians at prevailing wage (union scale). Hudson Gardens receives over $300k annually from SCFD, their ampitheatre seats about 3500 and adult tickets typically range from $30 to $65.
But it doesn't always work out that way.
Remember when Richard Marx w/ Orchestra was booked at Hudson Gardens in 2011? The DMA cried foul after learning that a community orchestra (also funded by SCFD) took the engagement with no intention of paying its musicians. After weeks of grassroots work and public education we were successful in turning that around and a professional orchestra was ultimately hired.
In his 7/29/11 Facebook Post Richard Marx apologized to his audience, saying this
"would not sit well with me, and I would never want any musician to perform for free." There was much more behind-the-scenes work that Mr. Marx cares to give credit for, but we thank him for his comments nonetheless.
So, the next time you're playing at Hudson Gardens or any one of dozens of other organizations and venues that DMA has challenged, ask if a contract was filed, ask if it's a union gig, and, ask if a small fraction of your check will be paid in union dues to ensure we can keep up the fight long after everyone else lets their guard down. |

|  We are an established professional wedding/corporate dance band. 6 piece band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 13th year. We do about 40-50 events per/year. Primarily weddings, corporate events, summer festivals and fund raisers. Because of this, we are always learning new music requests.
We all have full time, flexible jobs except for the manager/booking agent who works full time for the band. Because of this, the money is quite good.

Denver Public Library Concert Series Seeks Musicians
|
 Fresh City Life Concert Series at Denver Central Library is seeking exceptional musicians for one hour performances. Fresh City Life is offering free one hour concerts to the public every Saturday at 2 pm. We are seeking exceptional solos and duos to perform all types of acoustic music. Musicians are paid $100 per person.
Performers need to bring their own amplification (usually a small amp will do.) Audiences usually range from 50 to 100. Most performances are held in the great hall where patrons can enjoy the music from all over the library.

Say It Fast, Make Them Want It: Performers' Guerilla Marketing Workshop: Sexy Copy & Great Publicity Photos.

When you get a booking for an event, you are invariably asked to share information and photos that can help to promote the event. Are you ready? Do you have sharp, stylish copy that can be turned into a calendar listing or included in a press release? If you received your photo in an email, would you be interested in knowing more about the person in the picture? In this guerilla marketing workshop taught by Marta Burton and Chris Loffelmacher, you'll learn how to package your performance vitals so that the information is a click away - and you won't dread that moment every time you are asked to send a write up and photos for an upcoming event.
Attend this workshop and you'll leave with a three to four line description of your concert or event, tips and descriptors for future events, examples of great publicity shots to promote your performances and a solid understanding of the differences between a calendar description, a program listing, a bio and a press release.

Is Congress Even Necessary??

In the past, those of you that I've known either in the work place or socially, have never accused me of not having an opinion about things of a political nature. Plenty of you have run for the hills when I begin ranting and raving about the total waste of time and tax dollars created on a daily basis by the egomaniacs we call Congress, but you've all been nice enough to agree and nod your heads wisely until I run out of gas and cool down.
For months now, I've been on kind of a one man crusade to put congress either on a part time basis (since they're usually on vacation anyway,) or a commission basis, or piecework, or some other kind of compensation plan that allows them to get paid for what they do, not for what they say they're gonna do! I'm sure that all my trips to fantasy land haven't been anything unusual or anything most of you haven't already done on your own so let's indulge ourselves a little and put our druthers to work to see what we can come up with....OK??

McDonalds can no longer hide behind franchisees

The National Labor Relations Board Office of the General Counsel has investigated charges alleging McDonald's franchisees and their franchisor, McDonald's, USA, LLC, violated the rights of employees as a result of activities surrounding employee protests. The Office of the General Counsel found merit in some of the charges and no merit in others. The Office of the General Counsel has authorized complaints on alleged violations of the National Labor Relations Act. If the parties cannot reach settlement in these cases, complaints will issue and McDonald's, USA, LLC will be named as a joint employer respondent.
The National Labor Relations Board Office of the General Counsel has had 181 cases involving McDonald's filed since November 2012. Of those cases, 68 were found to have no merit. 64 cases are currently pending investigation and 43 cases have been found to have merit. In the 43 cases where complaint has been authorized, McDonald's franchisees and/or McDonald's, USA, LLC will be named as a respondent if parties are unable to reach settlement.

Wal-Mart convened a two-day U.S. Manufacturing Summit in Denver Thursday. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka says it's about time the giant retailer realized that American workers are the most qualified and best skilled at getting the job done. But Trumka says workers won't benefit from the Walmartiification of manufacturing. He urged Wal-Mart to use the summit to "to prove the company is committed to real and substantive change and an end to corporate whitewashing."

| Aurora Symphony Orchestra, a volunteer community orchestra, will hold auditions Wednesday, 8/27/14 7-9 PM and Saturday, 8/30/14, noon-4 pm at the Aurora Public Library, 14949 E Alameda Ave, for
ALL STRINGS, 3rd HORN, 3rd TROMBONE, BASSOON, PERCUSSION and OBOE. Auditions will also be held  throughout the season during rehearsal breaks on Wednesday evenings.
Candidates should prepare a solo of choice that demonstrates technical and musical ability or two different pieces of contrasting styles. Percussionists should prepare two minutes of music on timpani, mallets, and snare drum if possible. Sight-reading may be assigned at the time of the audition.

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.
