In Memory - David R. Shaner
David R Shaner
David R. Shaner, 67, of Fort Collins, Colorado passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 in Fort Collins. He was a retired member of the faculty of Colorado State University and a professional trumpet player and teacher.

He and his family had moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1985 to take a position in the Department of Music of Colorado State University, where he taught studio trumpet, music appreciation, and other subjects. Eventually, during his long tenure at Colorado State, he conducted the Symphonic Band, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and directed the University jazz program. In addition, he performed in the Faculty Brass Quintet and served in exemplary fashion as the director of the Colorado State University Summer Music Camp. He approached every task, whether experienced or as a novice, with the same zeal for excellence. Professionally, he was a mainstay in musical activities around Colorado, performing at various times with the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Philharmonic, the Central City Opera, and the Boulder Brass. His beautiful and artistic trumpet playing was heard in almost every Fort Collins opera, oratorio, and ballet production, and he was the principal trumpet for the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra for twenty-four years. In addition, he held the principal trumpet chair in the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra for twenty-six years, performing solo concerti with both groups.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa, daughters, Leslie Shaner and Teal Leonard, granddaughter, Madison Leonard, and grandson, Axton Leonard-all of Colorado. His brother, Tim Shaner, of Louisville, Kentucky and his sister, Cathy Bloemer, of Athens, Alabama, also survive him.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Organ Concert Hall in the University Center for the Arts on the campus of Colorado State University. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, PO Box 851, Cheyenne, WY 82003.

Five Lessons the Faltering Music Industry Could Learn From TV
The Daily Beast
8/3/14

Daily Beast TV As record labels repeat tired formulas and watch their business model collapse, they should turn on the television to see how another outmoded industry came back from the brink.

Of all the lies told to musicians, here's the biggest lie of them all: you have to give your talent away for free.

Creative people in a wide range of fields keep hearing the ridiculous mantra that "content wants to be free." The music industry is the worst offender. Many label execs tell artists-maybe the execs even believe it themselves-that musicians shouldn't expect to generate income from their recordings. But no worries, mate, you will make it all up by selling T-shirts at your gigs.

The experts who offer this bad advice need to watch some more TV. While record labels have been shrinking, TV networks have reinvented themselves by selling content via a profitable subscription model. TV has reversed the trend: households once got it for free, but now they are willing to pay for it. Yes, you can still get broadcast TV channels without paying a monthly fee, but only seven percent of American households go that route.

Not only has TV switched successfully from "giving it away" to a subscription model, but the shift has also spurred a new golden age of television. The same economic pressures that are killing the music business have led to the highest quality shows in the history of the medium.

Experience the debut of Stickman's Microtonal Power Trio (MP3) featuring guitarist Neil Haverstick, percussionist Thomas Blomster, and bassist Anthony Giannotti live on local FM radio or streaming live on KUVO.org at 8pm Mountain Standard Time August 17, 2014.

You've never heard anything like this before... literally.

Playing all original music in 19 tone equal temperament composed by Stickman Neil Haverstick, the familiar chords, melodies, scales, and notes of Western Music are different, creating a new sounding music. With musical styles based in the blues, jazz, world music, and rock, but also containing a basic mathematical twist, The Microtonal Power Trio is a group that truly needs to be HEARD to be believed! This isn't a new genre of music, this is NEW MUSIC.

Is Big Oil Fracking the New Tobacco??
By DMA member Rod Taylor
Posted on August 6, 2014

Rod Taylor A lot more years ago than I care to remember, the biggest event to happen on my family's farm was the day we got our first TV and entered into a brand new world of make believe. Far off places and beautiful people now entered our living room every evening and brought with them all kinds of products with glamorous advertising. Among them were all the current brands of cigarettes and tobacco ads with their brainwashing jingles singing the virtues of tobacco.  "LSMFT" and, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should!" and, "More Doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette!" They almost had you believing thatin order to be healthy, you had to smoke their product and plenty of us did!

Victory for Americans: Walgreen's Won't 'Invert' to Avoid U.S. Taxes
Walgreens Victory Huffington Post, 8/05/2014
By Roger Hickey
Co-Director, Campaign for America's Future

Yesterday afternoon the Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch reported the news: "Walgreen's Stock Tumbles on Report It Won't Invert." Citing unnamed sources (and Sky News), the bulletin reported that Walgreen's has decided not to "invert" the company's nationality to become a Swiss company, and thus lower its U.S. tax bill as it completes its takeover of the pharmacy chain, Alliance Boots.

This news represents a victory for a powerful alliance of citizen action groups, united under the banner of Americans for Tax Fairness, who have been sending a strong message to Walgreen's that, if the company did not renounce plans to abandon the U.S., Americans would abandon Walgreen's stores.

Lionsgate - you won't believe this!
Dear AFM member,

Wow. In 2013, Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer received $13 million in total compensation, a 95% increase from the year before.

This year, Feltheimer's pay went up by over 500%, to an initially reported $63.6 million in compensation for 2014. And as it turns out, Lionsgate actually underreported this figure, to the tune of $2.7 million.

One can't help but wonder how many Lionsgate films could be scored domestically, under established industry standards, with just the amount of their accounting error.

All in all, CEO Feltheimer's 2014 compensation--$66.3 million--is less than $1 million short of CBS CEO Leslie Moonves. In terms of executive compensation, Lionsgate now is truly a leader in the film and television industry.

But the bigger issue is whether Lionsgate will lead in a more meaningful way, and be accountable to musicians, our families, our union, our elected officials, and community leaders. To truly lead, Lionsgate must meet with AFM musicians, uphold industry standards, and stop offshoring film scoring jobs. Write Feltheimer now and ask, "Where is Lionsgate?"

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
