George Morrison Jr. Reflects on His Jazzy History
By Angelia De. McGowan
Denver Urban Spectrum, June 2014

George Morrison Performance Poster Today, Five Points' African-american heritage is celebrated by the Black American west Museum and Heritage Center, the Cleo parker Robinson Dance ensemble, as well as the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. A number of African-american churches and businesses are still landmarks in the community. According to the Five Points Business District, Denver's Juneteenth and Five Points Jazz Festival draws more than 50,000 people every year.

A history lesson is automatic after a visit to Denver's historic Five Points' neighborhood, widely recognized as the "Harlem of the West" due to its ling jazz history. The cultural historic district was the first predominantly African American neighborhood in Denver, and in the '30s, '40s and '50s was home to more than 50 bars and clubs, including the Rossonian Hotel, constructed in 1012 as the Baxter Hotel. With a name change in 1929 and the establishment of the Rossonian Lounge, the hotel became one of the most important jazz clubs between St. Louis and Los Angeles.

The likes of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Muddy Waters, Nat King Cole, Brook Benton, James Brown, Ray Charles, and Fats Domino often staged shows at the Rossonian after they finished their scheduled performances at the Denver hotels that refused them lodging due to the racial segregation existing at the time. These music legends regularly stayed at the home of classically trained violinist and orchestra leader, George Morrison, Sr. - Denver's Godfather of Jazz.

Denver may tear down Boettcher Concert Hall to build a new amphitheater
Boettcher Concert Hall
Boettcher Concert Hall (Jamie Cotten, Special to The Denver Post)
By Ray Mark Rinaldi
The Denver Post
Posted: 07/24/2014

The city of Denver is considering a plan to demolish Boettcher Concert Hall and build an outdoor amphitheater in its place at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

The 2,600-seat venue is Denver's symphony hall, home to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, which has played there every season since it opened in 1978.

The CSO is  set to move out - temporarily - at the end of the 2014-15 concert season to accommodate a planned $17 million upgrade of the facility. It had hoped to return a year later.

But, according to e-mails between the CSO and the Arts & Venues department, the plan may be changing.

Met Opera Prepares to Lock Out Workers
By Michael Cooper
New York Times
July 23, 2014

The labor strife at the Metropolitan Opera took on a new urgency Wednesday when its general manager, Peter Gelb, sent the company's orchestra, chorus, stagehands and other workers letters warning them to prepare for a lockout if no contract deal is reached by next week.

In letters to the company's unionized workers, Mr. Gelb, who is seeking to cut pay and benefits, wrote that "if we are not able to reach agreements by July 31 that would enable the Met to operate on an economically sound basis, please plan for the likelihood of a work stoppage beginning Aug. 1." He added, "I sincerely hope to avoid such an unfortunate event."

It's that time again: Dick Weissman and I are in concert at the Shady Grove at Four Mile Historic Park, Wed. July 30 at 6:30 PM. This is our fourth time at the very informal setting sponsored by Swallow Hill Music Association. We would be pleased to have you join us - bring a blanket or low chair and a picnic dinner if you'd like. Ron Jones will be joining us, adding his steel drum and fiddle to some tunes.

To avoid unintended "double-booking" I should mention that Judy Collins and Don McLean will be at the Arvada Center the same evening, also sponsored by Swallow Hill.

Say It Fast, Make Them Want It: Performers' Guerilla Marketing Workshop: Sexy Copy & Great Publicity Photos.
Presented by the Denver Musicians Association

When you get a booking for an event, you are invariably asked to share information and photos that can help to promote the event. Are you ready? Do you have sharp, stylish copy that can be turned into a calendar listing or included in a press release? If you received your photo in an email, would you be interested in knowing more about the person in the picture?  In this guerilla marketing workshop taught by Marta Burton and Chris Loffelmacher, you'll learn how to package your performance vitals so that the information is a click away - and you won't dread that moment every time you are asked to send a write up and photos for an upcoming event.

Attend this workshop and you'll leave with a three to four line description of your concert or event, tips and descriptors for future events, examples of great publicity shots for to promote your performances and a solid understanding of the differences between a calendar description, a program listing, a bio and a press release.

Scholars Speak Out Against Troubling 'Corporate Courts' (ISDS) in TTIP
As another round of negotiations for the U.S.-E.U. trade deal (known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP) began, 121 leading academic experts on trade, investment law, European Union (EU) law, international law, human rights, constitutional law, global political economy and related fields issued a statement expressing deep concern about the investor-to-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provisions that negotiators plan to include in the deal.

ISDS is a special legal right included in most U.S. trade agreements that allows foreign investors to challenge laws, regulations or any government decision in the country in which they are investing in special, private tribunals. You can think of them as special "corporate courts" that regular people (like you and me) aren't allowed to use.

5 Things That Have Changed Since the Federal Minimum Wage Was Last Raised
The federal minimum wage was last increased on July 24, 2009, and since then, a lot has changed (don't forget tipped workers haven't seen a raise since 1991). There have been so many attacks on working families since that time that it would be difficult to catalog them all. But workers and their allies haven't taken the attacks sitting down, and many are finding new ways to organize and stand up for their rights. Here are five things that have changed since the last time the federal minimum wage was increased:

I Support Raising the Minimum Wage - Graphic 1. Republicans Took Control of the House and Promptly Did...Nothing
: In the 2010 midterm elections, Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and then proceeded to engage in historical levels of obstructionism, and this 113th Congress is on pace to go down as one of the least productive Congresses in history. Congressional Democrats have tried to raise the minimum wage, but Republicans blocked the legislation. Not to mention Republicans also shut down the government in 2013.

2. Working Families Turned to State and Local Governments
: Not content to wait for Republicans in Congress to act, working family advocates turned their attention to state and local governments. On June 1, 2014, Delaware became the 22nd state (as well as the District of Columbia) to raise its minimum wage above the 2009 level. Four more states are set to increase on Jan. 1, 2015, while at least four more will consider ballot measures to increase their minimum wage in November 2014. At least a dozen cities or counties also have passed minimum wage increases in the past five years as well. Much of the state and local action has been in the last year or so, showing a growing momentum across the country for raising the wage despite Republican opposition.

3. Worker Productivity Has Risen, While Wages Have Stagnated
: One place you can't lay the blame for the economic crisis, stagnant wages and other economic problems is on workers. Between 1973 and 2013, worker productivity had risen nearly 65%. Meanwhile, wages for those same workers had only increased 8.2%.

4. CEOs, on the Other Hand, Have Gotten Much Richer
: While workers are much more productive and not being fairly compensated for it, CEOs are making out like bandits. The average S&P 500 company CEO received $11.7 million in 2013, or 774 times a full-time worker earning the federal minimum wage. The ratio of CEO pay to production and non-supervisory worker pay has gone from 46-1 in 1983 to 331-1 in 2013.

5. The Value of the Minimum Wage Keeps Getting Eaten Away by Inflation
: Stagnant wages are a real problem for working families and they are barely keeping up with inflation. A few examples make this problem clear. In January 2009, the average price of gas was $1.84 a gallon, now it's $3.59 a gallon. The price of beef has risen 74% since 2009 to a record level. In 2009, a gallon of milk could easily be purchased for under $3, now the price is more than $4 in many places. Overall, food prices have risen 9% since 2009, with many individual staples rising much faster.

Today, join working families around the country who are fighting to raise the national minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. Text WAGE to 235246 (standard data and message rates may apply).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
